Reasons for Accumulator Tip Selections

Crystal Palace v Blackpool – Crystal Palace win

Blackpool started promisingly, but have tailed off. They won their opening two fixtures at Bloomfield but have since picked up 2 points from their last 3 games. The Seasiders are without a number of strikers and Mark Cullen led the line on Saturday as the only fit forward on the books. Gary Bowyer could probably do with a free midweek after the hectic opening weeks to get his players back to full fitness, but instead they have to travel to South London. Palace may not have enjoyed the best start to the season, Alan Pardew’s side have enough firepower (even with a few rested) to see off Blackpool. Christian Benteke may even get a start as he looks to get himself up to speed after joining the club on Thursday.

Wolves v Cambridge – Wolves win

Another fairly straight forward one as Championship Wolves host Cambridge. The U’s beat Sheffield Wednesday in the last round but that was at the Abbey Stadium and they’ll struggle on their travels here. It’s not been the start that Shaun Derry would have wanted to the season with two draws and a loss, but there’s time to put it right. They can’t seem to keep sides out and Wolves have plenty of firepower, even in reserve. Walter Zenga put out a relatively strong side against Crawley in the first round victory here and I expect him to do the same here. Nouah Dicko is nearing full fitness and he may even get twenty minutes if he can full a place on the bench. Wolves are high off the back of a derby victory over Birmingham at the weekend and they should play with confidence here.

Luton v Leeds – Luton to qualify

We saw the damage can do in the last round against Aston Villa. Nathan Jones’ side looked good value for their victory in the previous round and they could do some damage again. They’ve been decent in the league so far and are yet to be defeated. They score goals, look dangerous on the break and could cause Garry Monk’s side a few headaches. Leeds got their first victory of the season at the weekend at out-of-sorts Sheffield Wednesday and although that will give them confidence, I think they could get caught out here. They were taken to extra time by League One Fleetwood last time out and squeezed past on penalties. Monk may choose to rest a few players as he looks towards another busy week and that could hand Luton the advantage.

Norwich v Coventry – Norwich win

Norwich have started the season well although they will be disappointed not to have taken all three points from the East Anglian derby on Sunday. It’s a fairly quick turnaround for the Canaries here though. I fancy them to get the better of League One Coventry who have struggled to find the back of the net. They’ve scored just one goal in the league so far and that came on Saturday against Bradford before conceding three goals. Tony Mowbray’s side have been reasonably be solid and there might only be a single goal in this game, but I fancy Alex Neil’s side to come out on top. Even if Neil rests a few players, there’s still plenty of threat in the side.

Scunthorpe v Bristol City – Scunthorpe to qualify

Scunthorpe needed extra time to squeeze past Notts County in the last round, but they’ve had a brilliant start to the season under Graham Alexander and they must be brimming with confidence ahead of this one. They hit five past Gillingham at the weekend, a side who had been decent before meeting the Iron. They haven’t even got last season’s top scorer Paddy Madden back to full fitness yet and he will be a real boost when he returns. Bristol City have played their past in a decent start to the season, but it’s two games without a goal against relegated Norwich and Newcastle now and I think this fixture might come too soon after a hectic and energy-sapping week. There’s a buzz around Scunny and I think Bristol City might have to make the trip back home knowing they’ve been dumped out of the competition.

Preston v Oldham – Preston win

Preston are up and running for the season following an excellent 2-0 win at QPR. It was unexpected after Simon Grayson’s side suffered a poor start to the campaign and the departure of striker Joe Garner. But they bounced back they should play a fairly strong side against fellow North West side Oldham. The Latics got a victory in a derby with Bury at the weekend, but it was an own goal which settled it. Oldham are really lacking goals in the side and their strikers simply aren’t firing. This could be prove troublesome at Deepdale and I think the Lilywhites can get the better of them. Oldham’s defence is pretty tough to break down, but the same could be said about Preston.
