Our football betting tips take a look at the evening game in the Championship which sees Norwich welcome Sheffield Wednesday to Carrow Road and our betting preview will suggest three great bets for the 5:30pm kick off.
Both sides got off to winning starts last weekend, but can either Norwich or Sheffield Wednesday make it six points from a possible six?
Norwich vs Sheffield Wednesday Preview
Norwich
Alex Neil couldn’t have asked for a better start to the campaign as Owen Coyle’s Blackburn Rovers were overrun by his Canaries. 4-1 was a fair reflection of the game in the end with the men from East Anglia showing their class in the final third.
They’re still in the hunt for another striker with Forest’s Britt Assombalonga believed to be high on their hit-list. Considering goals were a major problem in the Premier League, I’m quite surprised they haven’t rectified this over the summer, but there’s still time between now and the end of August.
With a 25 goal-a-season striker in their ranks Norwich could be hard to stop this season, but finding and signing one is easier said than done.
No cup game in midweek means they are well-rested for this encounter and they should go into it full of confidence.
Most of the news coming out of Carrow Road at the moment is not about this match, but it’s filled with transfer speculation. Naismith is the latest linked with a move away whilst a bid has apparently been accepted for Iceland star Aron Gunnarsson. There’s still plenty of unfinished business at this club and the squad could have a very different look come September.
Some people are already predicting that Norwich will be the team to beat this season and they could be very difficult to beat in front of the home fans. The last time they played at this level (2014-15) they won back to back home games at the start of the season scoring six goals in the process.
Jacob Murphy scored a screamer at the weekend and Alex Neil has reiterated that he won’t be sending many of his younger players out on loan this season. There’s a promising group emerging and plenty of positivity around the club.
Sheffield Wednesday
It was hard work, but Wednesday eventually overcame a dogged and determined Villa side on Sunday. A goalkeeping howler handed it on a plate to the Owls who probably just about shaded it at Hillsborough.
It wasn’t the most convincing display by Carlos Carvalhal’s side, but they did lose Stephen Fletcher to injury early on after he received a blow to the head.
They crashed out of the cup on Tuesday night, but it was a virtually different 11 to the one which started just 48 hours earlier. Carvalhal criticised the scheduling of the game and he had a point. No other side playing on Sunday competed on Tuesday, the rest had the luxury of an extra day’s rest.
At least it gave the Portuguese boss a chance to see some of his fringe players in action. However, it looks likely to be a similar side to last Sunday that will take to the field here. Daniel Pudil looks set to get a start for the away side and he’s challenged his team mates to kick on this season putting the disappointment of Wembley behind them.
Kieran Westwood, Tom Lees and Barry Bannan also look set to recalled following their rest on Tuesday night whilst Fernando Forestieri has been the subject of a bid from Derby County. It’s hard to imagine Sheffield Wednesday even considering a paltry sounding £7m bid for their maverick playmaker and match winner though.
Almen Abdi had an encouraging debut in a blue and white shirt and played in a kind of drifting role which he will hope to make his own this campaign.
On the incoming front, Joe Bennett looks set to be added to the squad in the next couple of days. The left back could move to Hillsborough before this match but is unlikely to make the squad if the deal crosses the line.
Importantly, Wednesday have kept hold of all their key players and look a real prospect this season. But, they will have to improve on their away form, which was patchy at times in 2015/16.
Norwich v Sheffield Wednesday Predictions
Sheffield Wednesday won just four away games in 2016, but they did draw an awful lot. Discounting cup competitions and play-offs, they lost just three times in 2016 on the road (Preston, Wolves and Bristol C) and against sides like Brighton, Derby and Hull, they took a point back to South Yorkshire. For my first Norwich vs Sheffield Wednesday Championship prediction I think they can do the same here and be hard to beat once more.

Norwich looked ruthless going forward at times, but that was against Blackburn who struggled at the back and will continue to ship goals as the season goes on. Wednesday will be harder to breach, but I think they’ll find a way. Likewise, The Owls should find the target and that gives is the chance to have a both teams to score bet at a good price in the Norwich vs Sheffield Wednesday betting odds.

Players love to score against their former employers and Gary Hooper faces his old side here meaning we need to have a look at the anytime goalscorer market odds. He might not start, but should get at least 20 minutes to make his mark and is worth a play, even if you wait until he comes on and get some better odds in-play. My final Norwich vs Sheffield Wednesday betting tip is Garry Hooper to score anytime.
Scorer Prediction – Gary Hooper – Anytime Goalscorer – 11/4 with Bet365: BET HERE.
