France vs Republic of Ireland betting tips, predictions and preview for today’s Euro 2016 last 16 match in Paris where France are overwhelming favourites.
Republic of Ireland left it late to book their place in the last 16 of the competition. They are rewarded with a clash against the hosts and they’re looking to right the wrong of 2010. Thierry Henry will be in the comfortable surrounds of the BBC Studios this time, but Martin O’Neill’s side will be looking to exact revenge for the incident which saw them miss out on the 2010 World Cup.
France vs Republic of Ireland Predictions
France started as tournament favourites at around 3/1, but haven’t been entirely convincing thus far. For all their firepower, they have appeared shaky at the back and laboured to a goalless draw with Switzerland in the final group game.
You sense there is another gear that France could easily move into if required, but we have only seen flashes of brilliances up to now. Dmitri Payet is doing himself no harm whatsoever and Paul Pogba looked more like his dominating, powerful self against the Swiss. Didier Deschamps’ side should be scoring upwards of four goals a game on personnel alone. The likes of Griezmann, Coman, Payet, Giroud, Pogba and Gignac is an embarrassment of riches, but the right combination has yet to be found and it hasn’t quite clicked.
Griezmann had a wonderful domestic campaign and has signed a new contract at Atletico Madrid this week. He was dropped during the group stage along with Paul Pogba. Both have received backing from fellow players this week and could have a huge say in the remainder of the tournament.
Individual mistakes by the Republic of Ireland allowed Belgium to score three goals last week, any such lapses here and France have the firepower to punish them. Irish goalkeeper Darren Randolph plays his club football for West Ham and will know all about the potential threat of Dimitri Payet. It’s going to take a huge collective effort by the Irish defence to prevent the French getting on the scoresheet.
Celebrations were exuberant when the final whistle sounded on Wednesday evening. Despite a seemingly uphill task of beating Italy, the Republic of Ireland joined Northern Ireland, Wales and England in the knock-out stage of the tournament. A late goal from Robbie Brady was enough to send them through and create a mass of green joy around the stadium and its surroundings. The victory looked like it was eluding them, especially when Wes Hoolahan missed a gilt edged chance, firing straight at Sirigu. Moments later he provided a peach of a cross which was nodded in by the impressive Brady.
Brady himself says his side have nothing to fear in the next round. They rode their luck at times with Insigne rattling the post moments after making his entrance. But, they were the better team and deserved their three points. The matchwinner knows that France aren’t to be taken lightly, but says ROI will concentrate on their own game. O’Neill will have to decide whether Shane Duffy continues at the back in place of the luckless Ciaran Clark and whether Daryl Murphy did enough to warrant a starting berth against the hosts. It’ll be a fascinating game and a great occasion. The tournament has come alive there’s some mouthwatering ties in the final 16. This is very much one of them.
Betting Predictions
Republic of Ireland were defensively solid against Italy and flung themselves at anything and everything. I fancy them to keep France out for at least 45 minutes. My First France vs Republic of Ireland betting tip is for the HT Score to be 0-0. It can backed at 6/4 with Paddy Power.

I’m a big fan of the Correct Score Group Betting on the William Hill website. I think France will win this, but by a slender margin and the odds are much more preferable in this market. My second France vs Republic prediction is for France to win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 in the Correct Score Group Betting market. It can be backed at 21/20 with William Hill.

It could be another moment of Payet magic which separates the two teams in this one. He came close to netting his third goal of the tournament against Switzerland when he rattled the bar. I fancy him to fire in from distance. My third France vs Republic of Ireland prediction is for Dmitri Payet to score from outside the penalty area. It can be backed at 11/2 with William Hill.
