Hull City vs Sheffield Wednesday Preview

Hull City

Steve Bruce’s men booked their place at Wembley after beating Derby County 3-2 on aggregate. They only just managed it though. After leading 3-0 from the first leg, they conceded early at the KC and the nerves of the Tigers fan could be heard jangling all over Yorkshire. They came through relatively unscathed and they can look forward to a huge clash with the Owls.

Steve Bruce is looking to mastermind a return to the Premier League and if there’s one man you’d want in the dug-out, it’s the former Birmingham and Sunderland boss. He has history in the Championship, history in the play-offs and has the greater squad depth to choose from.

Robert Snodgrass has been linked with Celtic this week and Hull fans will be hoping his head hasn’t been turned by the offer of working with Brendan Rodgers north of the border. They have suffered from inconsistency all season and they’ll be hoping to put in one of their better performances on Saturday. The kind of display that saw them top the table pre-Christmas and not the kind which saw them drop away limply in April. Memories of Dean Windass will come flooding back for Tigers fans and another 1-0 win would be perfect for them. Who can be their hero this time?

They’ve been resolute at the back all season, but they showed their vulnerability in the second leg against Derby. Curtis Davies and Michael Dawson will start as the first choice centre back pairing and they will want to keep things solid, particularly in the opening 20 minutes.

Hull have been back in training since last Wednesday in preparation for the 2016 Championship play-off final and they’ll be ample preparation and research conducted ahead of this tie by Bruce and his management team. A second season in the Championship was never the target and will be hugely disappointing to those of a Hull persuasion.

They have plenty of experience coming into this match and very few squad members will be fazed by the big occasion, stadium and atmosphere. Moses Odubajo is a relative newcomer and has spoken about it being the ‘biggest game of his career’, but the likes of Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone and Mo Diame are vastly experienced and have Premier League knowhow.

Sheffield Wednesday

Although finishing in the final play-off position, it seems that 6th (or 7th in League Two) is a profitable position. All three clubs across the Football League are through to the final and Sheffield Wednesday are one of them. Wednesday saw off Brighton over two legs. It started with a fairly convincing victory at Hillsborough and the Owls could have bagged more. Brighton scored early at the AMEX, but were pegged back through another Ross Wallace strike and that was that.

Although not ending the season convincingly, Carlos Carvalhal has guided his side to Wembley in his maiden Championship season. They are the outsiders in the Championship play-off final betting, but absolutely cannot be written off. Carvalhal has plenty of talent at his disposal and in Gary Hooper and Fernando Forestieri, two frontmen capable of hurting the most reliable of backlines.

There’s extra incentive for the former Celtic man as he could potentially help his current side pass his parent club Norwich with the Canaries suffering relegation to the second tier. They scored an impressive 66 times this season were exceptionally hard to beat. Just two defeats at Hillsborough all season backs that up.

Reaching the quarter final stage of the Capital One Cup was a huge boost and Carvalhal will not settle for his side being nearly-men. When asked if his side have been practicing penalties, Carvalhal confidently stated ‘It won’t come to penalties’ – a cocksure statement, but Wednesday are going to be hard to beat. The Owls fans have sold out their allocation and there will be a huge wall of noise spurring on the players as they take to the pitch.

Hull Team News

  • David Meyler came back for the second leg against Derby and added some steel in midfield. The Irish midfielder came through unscathed and will be pushing for a start again.
  • The goalkeeping jersey is also up for grabs with Eldin Jakupovic having deputised for Allan McGregor recently. But McGregor is fit again and could be restored to the starting.
  • Nick Powell is definitely unavailable for this game.

Sheff Wed Team News

  • Aidan McGeady has played his last game for Sheffield Wednesday and won’t be involved here.
  • Sam Hutchinson is back in contention after playing the second half against Brighton. The former Chelsea midfielder may be used to break up play and start attacks against a competitive Hull side.
  • There are no new injury worries for Ricardo Carvalhal.

Hull vs Sheffield Wednesday Predictions

At the start of the play-offs, I tipped Hull to forge a path back to the Premier League. Steve Bruce got his tactics correct in the first leg, but I was less sure in the second leg. There’s been plenty of time to take stock and although this is going to be tight, I must stick with my original selection of the Tigers to get the job done. My first Hull vs Sheffield Wednesday prediction is for Hull to win. They can be backed at 13/10 with Bet Victor.

The markets favour a dearth of goals in this one, but for a bit of value, I’m opting for both teams to score. Sheffield Wednesday are certainly capable of finding the net whilst Hull hit three away at Derby. Although their last meeting finished 0-0, they drew 1-1 earlier in the season. My second Hull vs Sheffield Wednesday betting tip for the 2016 Championship play-off final is for Both Teams to Score? Yes. It can be backed at 21/20 with William Hill.

BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE – 21/10 William Hill.

Abel Hernandez was one of the top scorers in the Championship this season and although the goals dried up towards the end of the campaign, he scored in the 5-1 win against Rotherham and then again in the first leg against Derby. He could give the Wednesday defence a few problems and he’s our anytime goalscorer tip this weeknd. My third Hull v Sheffield Wednesday prediction is for Abel Hernandez to score anytime. He is 13/8 with Bet365.

HERNANDEZ TO SCORE ANYTIME – 13/8 Bet365.
