Millwall vs Bradford Preview
Millwall
Millwall went behind, but didn’t leave it long to complete the comeback. Strikes from Lee Gregory, Steve Morison and Joe Martin completed the turnaround and they can go into this tie full of confidence. Neil Harris certainly has his side playing with a swagger and they can be deadly in the final third. They’ve won five of the last six games as the league came to close and possess a never-say-die attitude which saw them beat Gillingham in injury time at the Priestfield. It was a tempestuous game which saw Neil Harris sent to the stands, but his side showed plenty of passion and desire which will come in handy here.
The combination of Lee Gregory and Steve Morison provides youthful exuberance and experience and Bradford’s usually watertight defence struggled to cope with them. Harris hailed his side after the victory in West Yorkshire and was delighted with the urgency and pace his side displayed. His side could book their place at Wembley for the fifth time in 12 years by overcoming the Bantams.
Like his peers, Harris will treat this match like any other as he knows the job is far from complete. The former striker has experienced the highs and lows of Wembley as a player and is eager to reach the League One showpiece. Four of the existing squad were alongside Harris when the Lions were promoted to the Championship via this method and hitman Morison was one of them.
Whilst much of the squad has changed, David Forde, Tony Craig and Jimmy Abdou were present under Kenny Jackett and their experience will be vital to the squad. There is an abundance of younger players breaking through at the club, including Aidan O’Brien and Ben Thompson. Just one defeat in eight bodes well for the home side who have shone throughout the season under the club’s former hero. The Den is sold out and there will be a wall of noise to inspire the players as they take to the field.
Bradford City
There was hope around the stadium when Tony McMahon gave them the lead, but they were soon pegged back and there is work to do for Phil Parkinson and his side. Usually solid at the back, they found the Millwall front two a handful and couldn’t cope with their movement.
Parkinson lamented his side giving away soft goals during the game. It hasn’t been a problem this season and they’ll look to keep it tight at the Den and silence the home crowd. Felipe Morais should have reduced the deficit, missing a gilt edged chance. It would have made the 2nd leg a little easier for his side if the Frenchman had directed his shot goal-wards as opposed to around the post.
Goalscorer Tony McMahon says his side remain undaunted by the task ahead and have overcome adversity time and time again. McMahon swapped a relegation battle with Blackpool for a push at promotion with Bradford and he’s looking forward to tonight’s match.
The Bantams finished the season with three clean sheets as they looked to build momentum coming into the play-offs. The held Millwall to a goalless draw when they met at the Den at the end of October. Conceding just 24 goals on the road all season is impressive, but Rory McArdle and Nathan Clarke will need to find a way of stopping Gregory and Morison. They’ve conceded just four goals since the 5th of March in the league and will hope to bring some of that stability to East London.
Parkinson was pleased with his side’s second half performance and will hoping for more of the same here. An early goal would be ideal and would help dampen the atmosphere around the ground. A hostile Den would help Bradford more than the home side and they’ll be looking to use that to their advantage.
Millwall Team News
- Mahlon Romeo is still banned after his red card on the final day against Gillingham. Carlos Edwards is likely to deputise once again.
- Harris is likely to stick with the same 11 which ran out 3-1 winners at Valley Parade. Lee Gregory has only just come back from surgery and last 66 minutes in the first leg. The former Halifax man is likely to start, but Aidan O’Brien is waiting in the wings if there are any doubts.
Bradford Team News
- James Hanson is a big loss for Bradford. He has an ongoing ankle issue and Jamie Proctor is likely to deputise.
- Billy Clarke misses out once again, but Reece Burke is close to a return and could feature here. Steven Davies is also pushing for a start, alongside Paul Anderson.
