Sheffield Wednesday vs Brighton Betting Tips and Predictions – Play-Offs

Sheffield Wednesday vs Brighton betting tips and Championship predictions for the first leg of the play-off on Friday 13th May.

The first of the Championship play-offs begins on Friday night at Hillsborough as 6th place Sheffield Wednesday host 3rd place Brighton. We’ve got the best football betting tips for the match.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Brighton Predictions

Sheffield Wednesday

The Owls had a poor run at the end of the season which culminated in a 2-1 loss at Wolves. They can be confident about this tie as they are strong at Hillsborough and have kept Brighton out twice this season already. Two 0-0s occurred when the sides met in the regular season and with first legs traditionally cagey, don’t be surprised if we see a similar outcome here.

Ricardo Carvalhal has pointed towards several of his squad members who will be key to their promotion chances with Daniel Pudil, Fernando Forestieri & Ross Wallace referenced by the manager. If Wednesday can have a fully fit squad, they should create plenty of chances and Gary Hooper could cause problems for the Seagulls defence. The Portuguese coach described his squad as fresh and mentally strong ahead of this tie. They are pretty handy at home and have only lost twice this campaign. Once was against promoted Middlesbrough and other a shock derby defeat to Rotherham. They’ve only conceded four goals in eight home games and are very strong in front of their fans.

Carvalhal rested a few of his players ahead of this one and played a second string team against Wolves. Lewis McGugan, Marco Matias and Lucas Joao getting a run out. Wednesday are fancied by many to progress against a wounded Brighton side, but this will be tricky. They’ve only failed to score once since the 12th of March and although Brighton are tough at the back, I expect them to find a way through.

Fernando Forestieri was suspended when these sides met previously and he might be the difference this time around. The fans would love the chance to put a couple of divisions between themselves and Sheffield United and bring some long overdue cheer to the terraces of Hillsborough.

Brighton

It was hard not to feel for those Brighton fans who travelled all the way to Teesside to see their side narrowly miss out on promotion. The match ended 1-1 and the Seagulls missed out on automatic promotion due to goal difference. Just two goals separated the sides going into the tie and that was their undoing.

Brighton have been terrifically entertaining throughout the season and thoroughly deserve their place towards the top end of the table. In any regular season, 89 points would have been enough for an unchallenged promotion spot, but alas, it was an impressive campaign from the top two. Chris Hughton is a man universally respected and it would be a significant achievement if he was to guide Brighton into the Premier League.

At home, they’ve been rampant, scoring 25 goals at the AMEX since the 23rd of January.  Away from home, they’ve been a little inconsistent. They haven’t lost in 14 matches overall and will be tough to beat. Brighton aren’t the sort of side who know when they’re beaten. They finished 15 points ahead of the Owls and this won’t be an easy task. Even if Brighton trail 1-0, they will fancy their chances of overturning it at the AMEX. They’ve only failed to score three times since the 12th of January and all of those matches ended goalless.

Sheff Wed vs Brighton Team News

  • Ricardo Carvalhal has already suggested that he will use the experienced member of his squads for this tie. Fernando Forestieri, Daniel Pudil and Ross Wallace will start. Barry Bannan is also likely to be drafted in.
  • Sweeping changes from the weekend are likely to be made with Gary Hooper coming back from a week’s rest. Glen Loovens is another player likely to return to the starting 11.

  • Lewis Dunk is definitely out of this tie as he completes his two match suspension. Gordon Greer will partner Connor Goldson at the back once again.
  • Hughton will wait to see if Dale Stephens gets his red card overturned by the FA. Stephens was dismissed for his challenge on Gaston Ramirez. Sidwell is likely to replace him.
  • Bobby Zamora and Solly March are long term absentees.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Brighton Predictions

I think this will be another close encounter. With two 0-0s during the regulation season, it appears these teams are closely match and I think we might be going back to the AMEX all square. My first Sheffield Wednesday vs Brighton betting tip for the first leg of the Championship play-off is for the match to end a Draw. It is 9/4 with Coral.

Once again, I don’t think we’ll see many goals in this one. Neither side will want to concede first and Brighton have been pretty mean in defence lately. My second Sheffield Wednesday v Brighton prediction is for Under 2.5 goals. It can be backed at 4/6 with Sky Bet.

Sheffield Wednesday have plenty of firepower and it could come down to a single magic moment from the twinkle toes of Fernando Forestieri. The former Watford man is a delight to watch and has been an essential part of the Owl’s progress this season. My third Championship prediction for Sheffield Wednesday vs Brighton is for Fernando Forestieri to score anytime. He is 2/1 with 888Sport.
