Wolfsburg welcome Real Madrid to the Volkswagen Arena as the two meet for this Champions League quarter final first leg and I have three football tips for this one.
Wolfsburg vs Real Madrid Predictions
This is Wolfsburg’s first appearance at the quarter final stage of this competition after an impressive campaign so far. They’ve won six of their eight games so far, including all four at home where they kept three clean sheets too. Of course, they’ve not been up against a side of Real’s calibre yet and this will be a huge test for Dieter Hecking and his men, but with an excellent European home record they’ll feel they have a chance of taking a decent result to the Bernabeu when the sides meet again for the second leg.
Real have made the quarter finals for the sixth consecutive season and have been in outstanding form in this competition. They’re still unbeaten having won seven of their eight games and have kept seven clean sheets too. Last time it was Roma who succumbed to Zinedine Zidane’s men as his side recorded two 2-0 wins over the Italian club to safely seal their passage through to the quarters.
Wolfsburg’s great European form contrasts with their recent form in the Bundesliga. Since beating Genk in the last round they’ve failed to win any of their three league matches, losing two of them and only scoring once in the process. Still, with a game like this and players such as Julian Draxler and Max Kruse, who are both expected to start despite picking up knocks, they do have the ability to cause the Real defence problems. The home side are definitely without Naldo and Sebastian Jung though and Bas Doost will also be missing.
Real go into this one after winning the El Clasico 2-1, despite spending much of the second half with just ten men after Sergio Ramos was red carded. Ramos is expected to line up alongside Pepe as Rafael Varane remains a doubt but Zidane has no other injury concerns. The trio of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema will start up top.
This should be a Real win. Despite Wolfsburg’s great home record in this competition they’ve not had to face a side of Real’s quality and it’s going to be a tough outing for the German side. Still, they do have players who can create and put Real under pressure, the duo of Kruse and Draxler can cause problems for anyone. With Wolfsburg needing a goal to stand even the slimmest of chances of going through I think they’ll be on the score sheet too.
