Dortmund v Spurs – Dortmund win
Most pundits concluded that Spurs were handed a very tough draw in the competition when the fixtures were selected. Dortmund must surely be one of the strongest teams left in the competition and Mauricio Pochettino’s side have to go to Germany through. They may progress, over the two legs but this is a difficult task and I can’t see them bringing anything back. Spurs have a realistic chance of winning the Premier League, but the fixtures are coming thick and fast and perhaps fatigue will start to kick in. They play an excellent high tempo game and it could come back to trouble them. Dortmund have lost just three times all season, but are unbeaten at home and I can’t see Spurs breaking that record.

Basel v Sevilla – Basel win
Sevilla still haven’t managed to win away this season in La Liga and although this is a completely different situation, it’s hard to believe that they will finally find a cure to their travel sickness. They have been very effective at home, but their away form has been a real let down. At least they’ve been relatively straightforward to bet on. Basel saw off St Etienne in the last round of the Europa League so they cannot be written off here. They may play in a weaker league, but they have hit 11 goals in their last three home matches domestically. They beat St Etienne 2-1 in the home leg and I think they can take an advantage back to Spain.

Shakhtar v Anderlecht – Shakhtar win
Shakhtar thumped Schalke unexpectedly in the last round to progress. They were very impressive for a side who haven’t played many competitive games. Their season is only just getting back underway again, but they look like they could be tough to beat here. It’s never an easy place to go and Anderlecht haven’t been showing any consistency on the road recently. They’ve won just one of their last six away league games and there are some poor teams in that league. Shakhtar showed they had great spirit when they almost fought back from 0-4 down against Real Madrid in the Champions League, but fell short and lost by a single goal in the end. They will be tough to break down and if Anderlecht make it back to Belgium with a draw, they’ll be delighted. I don’t think they will so Shakhtar go into the accumulator tip.

Villarreal v Bayer Leverkusen – Villarreal win
Leverkusen are off to Spain for this first leg of their Europa League tie and they are coming here in poor form. They are without a win in four and have picked up maximum points just once in their last four away games. Admittedly they’ve been playing some good teams, but Villarreal have been showing decent form in La Liga. Until Saturday, they were unbeaten since the end of November and had won seven of their last eight home matches. They have flown under the radar somewhat with all the media focus on the big three and Gary Neville’s tenure at Valencia, but they have had a terrific season and deserve enormous credit. I think Leverkusen will struggle here and they’ve been conceding too many goals. Ten goals have been shipped in their last three matches and I think Villarreal can take advantage.
