Dover Athletic v Cheltenham Town Betting Preview and Predictions

Dover Athletic v Cheltenham preview and football betting tips for Sunday’s live Conference match on BT Sport.

There’s live action from the National League on Sunday afternoon as 1st meets 4th on the South Coast. We’ve picked out the three best football tips for this weekend’s fixture.

Dover v Cheltenham Predictions

Gary Johnson is the kind of wily manager who knows the football leagues and knows the best route out of them. True, he didn’t flourish at Northampton nor Peterborough, but at Yeovil and Bristol City, he showed his worth and he has navigated his Cheltenham side to the summit of the table.

Cheltenham are now unbeaten in 10 in the league and even the loss of Centre Half Aaron Downes to injury cannot halt their intended march back to the Football League.

Just two sides sit between these opponents in the table and it’s been an excellent season for Dover Athletic. These two sides have scored 103 goals between, so it’s easy to see where their strengths lie. The visitors have a much better defensive record though with just 19 goals conceded in 28 league matches, that’s why they are top of the pile.

It’s coming up to three months since the Robins rose to the top of the table as they look to bounce back immediately. They are in non-league for the first time In 16 years and as the likes of Grimsby and Lincoln will testify, it’s a hard road back into League Two.

They haven’t been defeated since September the 26th though and they have near neighbours Forest Green in hot pursuit.

Dover have only lost twice here all season though, so this will be far from straightforward for Johnson’s side.

Stefan Payne got sent off when these teams met earlier in the season, his dismissal was the catalyst for a Cheltenham comeback. He misses out due to suspension (again!) whilst Liam Bellamy has not yet reached full fitness. It was a topsy-turvy game in Gloucestershire and the fans will be hoping for a similar level of entertainment once again.

Cheltenham have plenty of goals in them and despite drawing a blank at Boreham Wood in their last away trip, they might find the Dover defence a little more generous. The Whites have conceded 15 goals in their last eight games and haven’t managed to keep a clean sheet since the 31st of October. Luckily, they score plenty down the other end and they’ve only failed to score twice since the middle of September. One of those was against defensively sound Grimsby and both blanks have been away from home.

Cheltenham may have kept three clean sheets in their last four, but they’ve all been against teams in the bottom five and I think they will concede here.

My first football prediction for Dover v Cheltenham is for both teams to score. It can be backed at 8/11 with Bet365 who have the best odds for this bet.

Looking at the betting odds for Dover v Cheltenham, there’s every chance it could be two draws in two for the Robins. But, with Dover losing two of the last seven games and not faring well against teams around them, I will back the away side. It may have been all the way back on the 30th of October, but they beat Grimsby over in Lincolnshire and I think that set a good marker for the season. Dover failed to beat Eastleigh, Grimsby and Forest Green. They recently lost to in-form Halifax and at home here to 5th place Bromley. I think Cheltenham can do the double over them.

My second Dover v Cheltenham betting tip is for Cheltenham to win. They can be backed at 7/5 with William Hill.

Dover score plenty of goals and I’ve absolutely no doubt they will find a way onto the scoresheet here. I feel as though backing a home player would be more beneficial here. Ricky Miller has been scoring recently in the league, the former Luton man has bagged three goals in the last two league games and I think he can add to that here.

The third football prediction for Dover v Cheltenham is for Ricky Miller to score anytime. He can be backed at 11/4 with Bet365.
