Sunderland v Aston Villa Predictions and Betting Tips – 2/1/16

Sunderland v Aston Villa betting tips and Premier League predictions for this weekend’s match and the best football tips from our preview.

Sunderland host Aston Villa at the Stadium of Light in a bottom of the table clash as both teams start the new year in a relegation battle and we’ve previewed the match and come up with three betting tips for the Premier League fixture.

Sunderland v Aston Villa Predictions

It has been an atrocious first half of the season for both sides. Villa sit bottom of the Premier League table with eight points, having won just once this season. The optimism that greeted Remi Garde's arrival as manager and a good 0-0 draw in his first game in charge at home to Manchester City has vanished, and it's looking likely that they'll lose their top flight status for the first time in 28 years.

Sunderland, like Villa, have had a change of manager. Sam Allardyce came in October but fortunes haven't changed for the Black Cats. They've lost their last five and have the worst defensive record in the Premier League, having conceded 38 goals already this season.

Sunderland's fifth defeat in a row came at home to Liverpool on Wednesday night. Liverpool in truth could have added to Christian Benteke's early second half goal, but Sunderland did create chances of their own. They put in an energetic performance, midfielders Lee Cattermole and Yann M'Vila impressed and if they can put in performances of similar ilk I think they stand a chance of staying up.

Aston Villa team news vs Sunderland – Villa are without Jordan Ayew for this one after picking up a fifth booking of the season. He is their leading goalscorer with five goals and has been a shining light in a woeful season so far. He will be a huge miss. Ashley Westwood is also suspended but there are hopes that defender Jores Okore will be fit to play.

Sunderland team news vs Aston Villa – As for Sunderland, midfielder Jack Rodwell is out after picking up an injury in the loss to Liverpool, and there's doubts over whether Sebastian Coates will be fit after a collision in the same game. If Coates does miss out, that leaves Allardyce with just one fully fit centre half in Wes Brown, with John O'Shea and Younes Caboul doubtful.

Villa do have a good record against Sunderland, unbeaten in nine. If Ayew was fit for Villa, I could see the away side taking something from this game. Without him, though, Villa don't really offer much going forward. Rudy Gestede may start in this one but I'm not sure whether he'll get the service he needs to cause Sunderland problems. Sunderland themselves have creativity issues of their own, Fabio Borini and Jermain Defoe had no service on Wednesday but worked non-stop and carved out their own chances. I think in front of a home crowd they'll do enough to take all three points in this one.

My first Sunderland v Aston Villa prediction is for Sunderland to win and the best odds for a home win here are 31/20 with Bet Victor.

Talking of Borini, he scored in the defeats to Chelsea and City and could've added to his seasons tally on Wednesday if it wasn't for Simon Mignolet. He's possibly not reached the heights he did when he was first on Wearside on loan but he's still a danger for opposition defences. If Villa defend the way they did against Norwich City I can see him causing problems running in from the left hand side.

With that in mind, I'm going for Borini to score anytime for my second Sunderland v Aston Villa prediction. You'll find the best odds at bet365 who have the bet at 13/5.

It's difficult to say Villa won't score in this one when you consider the injuries Sunderland have in defence. M'Vila and Cattermole will have to put in a similar effort as they look to protect their depleted back line. Goalkeeper Vito Mannone has been in outstanding form since getting back in the side too and I don't think Villa will have enough of an attacking threat to get on the scoresheet. With a raucous home crowd behind them I think Sunderland could grab a couple.

Risky one perhaps, but for my third I'm going for a Sunderland v Aston Villa score prediction of Sunderland to win this 2-0. Get on it with Bet Victor at 12/1.
