Walsall v Port Vale Predictions
Dean Smith may have departed for pastures new, but he’s left a terrific legacy in the West Midlands as he brought through a number of promising youngsters and left the club in with a real shot of promotion this season. They could be facing his new club Brentford next season if they do continue their upward curve. The board have meticulously gone about their search for a new boss and they’ve settled on Sean O’Driscoll.
Sean O’Driscoll is a decent fit for the club and as we saw in his tenure at Doncaster, he will bring an easy on the eye style and be able to bring through some of the younger players at the Bescott. John Whitney was in temporary charge for now and he oversaw a victory on penalties over Chesterfield in the FA Cup. The new boss will be boosted by the news that Rico Henry has been passed fit, but Tom Bradshaw’s participation has not been confirmed.
It’s been a mixed season for Port Vale so far, but Rob Page has had time to get his feet under the table properly. They’ve taken a single point from the last couple of matches, having previously gone on a four match winning streak. They have only won one of their last four away matches and that was against struggling Barnsley. Although this journey won’t take much undertaking, they haven’t fared well on the road with the 5th worst away record in the league.
It has been an odd couple of weeks for the club though as they were put up for sale recently following their FA Cup defeat to Exeter. That can’t have helped stability and perhaps it has knocked the concentration of the players and management team.
Despite all that turbulence, Vale are only four points off a play-off spot sitting in 12th place, but they have a tough Christmas fixture list. This match is followed by a trip to Coventry (at least the coach driver won’t be overworked during the Festive period) before hosting ever Bury on the 28th.
Walsall still have the best away in the league, but they aren’t too bad at home either. They’ve taken 18 points from their 10 home matches so far but they’ve had some tough games including beating Coventry, Gillingham, Bradford and picking up a point against Sheffield United.
Port Vale are a very decent proposition at home, but their ropey away form makes me want to side with the hosts here.
My first Walsall v Port Vale prediction is for Walsall to win. The best odds for Walsall to beat Port Vale are 17/20 at Sky Bet.

Walsall have scored in all but two matches this season, their last blank came on the 3rd October, away at Wigan. They have plenty of firepower in their squad and score goals from all over the park. They have one of the best defensive records in the league, but haven’t kept a team out in any of their last six matches. Port Vale have scored in each of their last six matches and have scored in all but two matches since the middle of September. They’ve also only kept four clean sheets all season, three of those have been at home.
My second Walsall v Port Vale betting tip is for Both Teams to Score? Yes. The best odds for our BTTS tip in this fixture are 8/11 with Betfred.

I think Port Vale will get on the scoresheet and there’s one man in form for the Valiants who has been scoring of late who I want to put up for my goalscorer tip on this weekend fixture. AJ Leitch-Smith has always had an eye for goal and he seems the most likely man, given his recent strike-rate, to find the back of the net. He’s scored in four of the last five games in League One.
My third Walsall v Port Vale betting tip is for AJ Leitch-Smith to score anytime. He can be backed at 3/1 with Bet365.
