Arsene Wenger’s side pulled off the final act of their great Champions League escape on Wednesday after beating Olympiakos by three goals to nil. They started the game knowing that a win by two clear goals would see them through, and Olivier Giroud’s classy hat trick saw them qualify with relative ease.

 

Despite being second in the Premier League, Arsenal have stuttered domestically recently. Their 3-1 win over Sunderland last weekend was the first time they had managed to take maximum points in the League since October.

 

November saw the Gunners draw against arch-rivals Spurs as well as a particularly disappointing draw against Norwich. Sandwiched between these two stalemates was a loss to West Brom at the Hawthorns.

 

The top teams have all been unexpectedly dropping points this season, and despite being in abysmal form, Aston Villa know that if they can perform with the same passion and quality they showed in Garde’s first game; the 0-0 draw at home to Man City, Villa have a chance of taking points from the clash against Arsenal this weekend.

 

However, since taking over at Villa Park, the French manager has seen his side take just two points from a possible 12, including a devastatingly poor 4-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park. The Villains followed this up with an equally disappointing home defeat to Watford, before an improved, albeit slightly flattering, 1-1 scoreline away to Southampton last weekend.

 

Villa are without a win in 14 games and this run is unlikely to end against Arsenal. Since selling their talented Belgian Christian Benteke to Liverpool in the summer, Villa have struggled to find the goals. This lack of attacking intent has had pretty sure consequences in their results, and despite the arrival of Rudy Gestede, the Benin striker has failed to have the impact that the fans expected.

 

With Arsenal’s inconsistent form, Villa do stand a chance, but it's a slim chance at that. I can't look past Villa’s lack of attacking quality, and I can see them being under the cosh for a large proportion of this game.
