What a tie we have here. When the groups were announced and the fixtures drawn this seemed like it would be nothing more than a dead rubber to complete the group games for Arsenal. Every other time they’ve travelled to Olympiakos it has been when the game meant nothing and they could go with a makeshift squad to focus on the increasing intensity the domestic league throws up around Christmas.
How wrong could we have been, after a shocking defeat in Zagreb and a 3-2 home defeat to Olympiakos, Arsenal find themselves perilously close to elimination at the group stage. They need to win by two clear goals or win 3-2 or higher scoring than that to progress against a very strong opponent. Olympiakos are no world beaters by any means, but their home record both domestically and in Europe is very strong as the intimidating atmosphere given by the crowd make it very difficult for away teams to cope.
Couple this with Arsenal’s depleted line-up due to injury and this match will be very tricky for the away team.
I do believe Arsenal will win the match, as they do tend to come up with the goods when it really matters, however I can’t be certain that they will qualify and this is because I can’t see Arsenal keeping a clean sheet, Olympiakos will be playing with confidence and look to hit Arsenal on the counter attack, knowing a goal will make it even harder for Arsenal to qualify.
