Jose Mourinho’s side go into this game on the back of a poor run of form in the Premier League, a 2-0 win against Arsenal is one of only a few positive that Chelsea can take from their woeful start to defending their title. Since that result they have been brought back down to earth with a late revival against Newcastle to record a 2-2 draw and a 2-1 defeat to Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday night. 

 

Southampton, who also endured an indifferent patch of results before the international break with a 2-3 home loss to Manchester United and a 0-0 draw to West Bromwich, have had a recent revival of form, scoring nine goals in two games and conceding only one goal in the process. Three of those nine goals came in a comfortable 3-1 victory over Swansea last weekend. Whereas Mourinho’s attacking options seem bereft of any form or confidence they showed last season, Ronald Koeman has welcomed back some of the form and link up play Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Saido Mane brought to the side at the start of last season.  The contrasting form of both sides and the lack of stability at the heart of Chelsea’s defence since John Terry’s exile suggests you can’t look past Southampton scoring goals in this game and maybe snatching a win at Stamford Bridge.

A win against Jose Mourinho’ side is something the Saints have never achieved, with the Portuguese manager taking four wins and two draws off Ronald Koeman’s side. Southampton have an even poorer overall record against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge winning only one of their last 13 trips, a 4-2 victory in January 2002 was their last recorded win. However Southampton did manage to take two draws from their encounters in the Premier League last season, including a 1-1 draw away from home. Ronald Koeman has been further improving his Southampton side each season and it has shown with them maintaining an unbeaten record away from home, as well allowing their opponents the least amount of shots in the Premier League (17). Chelsea on the other hand have allowed the most (45) which would suggest why they are sitting eight points adrift of Manchester United with a goal difference of -3.

The stats suggest this will be a tight affair that could go either way. Despite Chelsea season almost reaching crisis point you cannot look past their undoubted quality within their ranks, players such as Hazard and Willian are yet to reach the heights of last season but they still possess the quality to cause Southampton serious problems so a both teams to score bet could be the banker football tip of the weekend. I feel however if Pelle and Mane are in the same mood as they were against Swansea the Chelsea defence could be in for a tough afternoon.
