Football League predictions for the new League One season where we have picked out our best three bets ahead of the League One season.
League One kicks offs on the 8th August and it appears closer than ever. No fewer than 10 teams will all fancy their chances of promotion to the Championship and follow in the footsteps of MK Dons, Preston and Bristol City. The Robins ran away with the league last season, whilst the Dons provided the goals and the entertainment and PNE rid themselves of their unwanted play-off record.
Football League Predictions – League One
There doesn’t appear to be an overwhelming favourite this season, with Sheffield United once again leading the betting, unsurprisingly. Relegated pair Wigan & Millwall find themselves towards the top of the betting with many people fancying Bury and Doncaster as dark horses.
The team I fancy for a tilt at promotion is Lee Johnson’s Barnsley. The former Oldham manager is assembling a decent team and they performed well towards the end of the last campaign. He has used the loan market well and if he can help Sam Winnall find his goalscoring touch, he may be onto a winner. Connor Hourihane is one of the most promising midfielders in the Football League and they tied defender Lewin Nyatanga to a longer deal. Alfie Mawson is an excellent signing whilst there is promise surrounding Connor Wilkinson and young defender Mason Holgate is highly sought after.
They might not win the league, but I certainly fancy them to give it a good go and second place or a play-off success could be on the cards.
My first football prediction for promotion in League one is Barnsley, the best odds are 11/2 at Sky Bet.
Scunthorpe have been making some impressive signings on the quiet. Luke Williams has joined from Middlesbrough after spending time on loan last season. He is a livewire, who will chip in with goals, take a set piece and create plenty of chances for those around him. Stephen Dawson will anchor the midfield after joining from Rochdale, whilst Jack King, Scott Wiseman and Scott Laird all join from promoted Preston and have plenty of experience of this division. Jamie Ness is another decent signing whilst there is a rawness about Charlie Goode and Isaac Assenso which will add to the blend of youth and experience.
Mark Robins hasn’t always been successful, he struggled at Huddersfield, but was better at Barnsley and he is clearly an astute coach who thinks things through and will find a way of getting the best out of his squad. The Iron definitely picked up towards the end of last season under his tutelage.
I think a top half finish is almost inevitable and odds of Evens with Bet Victor is a steal for my next football prediction.
You can get 1/4 odds four places on the top goalscorer market in League One. It may be worth backing a couple of bigger prices. Tom Bradshaw is a natural finisher and once again may have to carry the burden of Walsall’s goalscoring tally. If he stays fit, he should score regularly and although they may only be expected to finish comfortably mid-table, at 20/1 he may be worth backing each way. He scored 17 goals in 29 appearances last season despite missing part of the season to injury, so a full unblemished campaign could be fruitful.
Lee Gregory may be another one to watch out for. The former Halifax man struggled to make an impact in the Championship at first, but he eventually found his stride and scored nine goals. It may not seem a lot, but he was making the step up three divisions and going down a level may help him at least double that tally. He is also priced 20/1 and is my third football prediction for League One.
Tom Bradshaw (Walsall) – Top Goalscorer e/w – 20/1 Ladbrokes.
Lee Gregory (Millwall) – Top Goalscorer e/w – 20/1 Bet365.
