Tuesday’s Accumulator Tips:
Middlesbrough to beat Millwall
A rare slip up for Middlesbrough at the weekend, but Hillsbrough has not been an easy place to collect 3 points from and perhaps the Boro were suffering from a little fatigue. Aitor Karanka is not the type of manager who will let his players underperform two matches in a row and he will make the neccessary changes to ensure they don’t lose in front of their own supporters. He couldn’t have wished for a much easier match, Millwall are hopelessly out of form and their own fans turned on manager Ian Holloway in midweek in a messy episode at the New York Stadium. They are 6 points off safety and can’t seem to find the net despite the additions of Gary Taylor Fletcher and Diego Fabbrini. Middlesbrough have one of the most obstinate defences in the league and I can’t see Millwall breaching it.
Watford to beat Fulham
It looked all over for Watford after they found themselves two down at Elland Road at the weekend, but they had the neccessary guile to battle back and earn a crucial 3 points. Watford have a large squad they can afford to rotate and although it may have gone under the radar, the addition of Ben Watson has had a positive impact on the midfield. Matej Vydra is back amongst the goals and as long as he stays fit, the calm head of Craig Cathcart at the back is a reassuring presence. Fulham surprisingly beat Derby, but that was on their own patch and they have a woeful away record, including a battering by Wolves a week ago. The Hornet will be hoping the rest of the top 6 slip up once again and they can take advantage.
Charlton v Forest – Over 2.5 goals
Two managers meet at The Valley, both of whom have had a hugely positive impact on their respective new employers. Much has been made of Dougie Freedman’s arrival, but the Scot has gone about his business quietly and effectively and looks to be back to the successful days he oversaw at Palace before being attracted by the bright lights of Bolton. Guy Luzon has flown under the radar somewhat, but he had turned around the fortunes of the South London club who were plummeting down the league before his arrival. Both of these bosses have found the key to getting their sides scoring again and Forest have now scored 16 goals in their last 5 games whilst Charlton have scored 11 in their last 5 and scored 3 goals in 3 of their last 4 matches. It looks as though we may see a few here.
Port Vale to beat Oldham
Vale may not be pulling up any trees this season, but they have an excellent record at Vale Park and look to continue that on Tuesday night. Oldham lost 4-0 at home to Preston on Saturday and look a little shellshocked by Lee Johnson’s defection to Barnsley. The former midfielder is an exciting managerial prospect and it was quite clear the team were lost without him at Boundary Park at the weekend. Meanwhile Port Vale put 3 past Doncaster in their last home game and could easily do the same again.
Newport to beat Mansfield
Jimmy Dack is in charge of Newport following Justin Edinburgh’s step up to Gillingham and he is steadying the ship nicely with 2 victories in their last 3 games. These were against top teams Wycombe and Burton, the latter being away from home and I can’t see any reason why they can’t do the same again. Mansfield have a horrendous home record, I can’t see them being relegated, but they just can’t get the breaks away from Field Mill and they probably will face the same misfortune in Wales. They have lost recent away trips to Carlise, Morecambe and Oxford, all teams that are less ruthless than Newport and the Stags will find it difficult at Rodney Parade.
