Today’s Accumulator Tips
Schalke v Real Madrid – Over 2.5 goals
These two teams faced one another in the Champions League Knock Out stages last season and the Spanish side triumphed with aplomb. They won 6-1 on German soil and then completed the rout 3-1 back in Spain. Karim Benzema scored in the first leg and with the most assists in the Champions League this season, he’ll be hoping to cause carnage once again. There’s no doubt that Schalke have tightened up since then, but I still fancy there to be goals in this one. Schalke have conceded 9 goals at home in the UEFA Champions League this season and although the floodgates are unlikely to open, there may be plenty of openings.
Basel v Porto – Both Teams to Score? Yes
These sides have never met previously and it could be a decent entertaining game of football. Basel have the habit of both scoring and conceding plenty of goals, their last set of results read 1-1, 2-4, 2-1, 2-3, 2-1, 2-2 and 1-1. Although some of these will have been against fairly lowly Swiss opposition, it could be the same when Porto come to town. The side who sit second in the table have kept 3 consecutive clean sheets but largely against lower ranked opposition and they have scored 13 goals in their last 4 games and should have the firepower to get on the scoresheet. It could be an entertaining night in the Champions League.
Birmingham v Middlesbrough – Middlesbrough win
Middlesbrough looked like they have been on the end of a crushing defeat when they conceded 2 goals inside 2 minutes and 34 seconds at the Emirates on Sunday, but the Teessiders held it together and they emerged with a bit of credit from the encounter. Aitor Karanka’s side can concentrate on the league now as the cliché goes when any side is removed from a cup competition. The expectations have been significantly raised by the Spaniard as Middlesbrough lie second in the league. Birmingham improved significantly under Gary Rowett as he steered them clear of the relegation zone, but the goals have dried up recently, but perhaps it is just a blip. I still think the away side will have too much for the Brum.
Leyton Orient v Bradford – Both Teams to Score? Yes
It’s been a turbulent season for Leyton Orient, constant rumours of unrest in the dressing room and a number of managers potted already, it couldn’t have contrasted any more to the season of stability under Russell Slade which saw them lose in the play-off final. The O’s find themselves immersed in a relegation battle and they got themselves a much needed 3-2 win at Chesterfield at the weekend. The victory didn’t come easy and thanks to two goals from David Mooney, they salvaged an unexpected 3 points. Bradford’s exploits this season have been well documented and they may be a little tired after their energy sapping FA Cup tie on Sunday. The Bantams will be confident after finding the net twice against Premier League opposition, but didn’t really face much pressure from Sunderland. Leyton Orient may pose them a few questions defensively.
