Wycombe v Aston Villa Predictions
Hosts Wycombe haven't quite hit the heights of last year so far this season, but have managed to string a bit of form together over the last few weeks. Gareth Ainsworth's men have only lost two of their last eleven games in League Two, and this run has seen them rise to the playoff places.
Wycombe's route to the third round has already been fairly impressive following two victories on the road. Their first round opponents Halifax Town were comfortably beaten 4-0, before The Chairboys recorded an excellent win at League One Millwall to set up their money-spinning clash with Aston Villa.
For the visitors, Saturday's encounter could be a welcome release from being spanked on a weekly basis in the Premier League. However, such is the state of affairs at Villa Park at the moment, even that might be a step too far. Remi Garde's men have shown glimpses of improvement in recent weeks, but their shambolic defending continues to be their downfall. Rather predictably, Villa have the worst goal difference in the whole Premier League and their only win – a fortunate one at that – came on the opening day of the season.
Odds for the clash have Wycombe trading as 13/5 underdogs. Villa can be backed at a much shorter price of 6/5, with the draw available at 12/5.
It will certainly be interesting to see how this weekend's tie sits in Garde's list of priorities. Villa are already cut adrift at the bottom of the league, but a run of wins could get them back in with a sniff of avoiding relegation. Leicester City were in a similar predicament last year and managed to achieve the impossible, so it can be done. Based on current form, though, this looks about as likely as Alan Hutton winning The Ballon D'or.
Nevertheless, we can't forget that this is a Premier League side – albeit only for a few more months – against a League Two team. With this in mind, I fancy Villa to edge an entertaining game. Therefore back Villa to win outright at 6/5 with Betfred and over 2.5 goals at 23/20 with Coral.
