West Ham v Sunderland predictions

Who Has Been West Ham’s Best Summer Signing?

As the 2014/15 campaign has turned out surprisingly well for the Hammers this term, especially when you consider how varied West Ham’s style has become since last season, the scouts and money men who make up the background staff at Upton Park can all give themselves a good pat on the back after a successful summer transfer window.

Whilst January remained a particularly quiet month for Sam Allardyce’s determined side, the addition of several new faces at the beginning of the season has completely revitalized West Ham’s approach, and seen much of the fear and tension that usually surrounds the Boleyn Ground swapped for a new-found excitement and a brighter sense of optimism.

Because as many as nine new players were sourced in the summer, now would seemingly be a good time to ask which signing has been the most rewarding for the Hammers, and just who has had the greatest impact for Big Sam this season?

West Ham’s Best Signing

One name that has become particularly hard to ignore since his arrival is that of in-form Senegalese striker, Diafra Sakho. The West Ham no. 15 has been mightily impressive for his new club this season, scoring 10 goals in 18 appearances, and providing great entertainment for the fans whilst doing so. Sakho has simply been massive hit this campaign, and although Big Sam nearly missed out on signing the former Ligue 2 striker in favour of Sunderland’s Connor Wickham, he is fast becoming West Ham’s surprise package of the season, if not quite the best.

Other strong contenders for best Hammers signing of the season come in the form Sam Allardyce’s flying full-backs, Aaron Cresswell and Carl Jenkinson. Both English defenders have had a huge impact on the way West Ham approach their matches. The pair, who arrived from Ipswich Town and on loan from Arsenal respectively, have proved to be a good asset going forward, assisting Big Sam’s strikers in the crossing positions, as well as giving their team some much needed strength and resilience at the back.

Whilst neither player have reached phenomenal levels this season, the consistency in each of their performances really has been a joy to behold.

Although there are several other honourable mentions to consider, such as former West Brom playmaker Morgan Amalfitano, Ecuadorian World Cup star Enner Valencia, as well as the towering midfield enforcer Cheikhou Kouyate, only one name really deserves to take the crown…

Along with a reenergised Stewart Downing in the heart of West Ham’s midfield, Alex Song has simply been the difference for Big Sam this season. His ability to pick the ball up calmly from the back, find a teammate with the type of vision only a Barcelona player could possess, and then see a goal fly in as a result of his efforts, has proved to be the right formula for the Hammers time and time again in 2014/15. The recently retired Cameroonian international has kept West Ham ticking and allowed all those around him to play at a higher level than would normally be reached.

Yes – the former Arsenal man hasn’t been spectacular in every game this season, but as it would largely be agreed within the broader footballing community, Alex Song remains a great player, with an even better effect on his teammates. If the West Ham chairman can somehow land the Barcelona man on a permanent deal this coming summer, it would certainly be the best bit of business West Ham will have done in a long while.

All in all then, most of West Ham’s summer signings have been a resounding success this season. A quick shout-out deserves to go to Mauro Zarate nonetheless, who if Sam Allardyce showed a little more faith in this campaign, could have been another strong contender for Hammers fans to enjoy. Alex Song however, remains the player most deserving of the ‘best West Ham summer signing’ title so far this season.
