Burnley v Man City betting tips

Why have Manchester City been second best to Chelsea this season?

Whilst their mid-week victory over Stoke City arrived in very convincing style, Manchester City have hardly been at their most impressive so far this campaign.

They still manage to boast the likes of Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Yaya Toure in their star-studded line up, but something about Manuel Pellegrini’s side this season has nonetheless looked slightly off the boil.

In the wake of City’s, albeit brief, shortcomings this campaign, Jose Mourinho and Chelsea have unceremoniously stormed to the top of the Premier League table, and have impressively maintained their lofty position as a result of their hard work on the pitch. The Blues may only have a seven point gap to contend with at this point of the season, which could in-fact be enough to win the ultimate prize, but they are playing with a certain style and passion that Manchester City have simply lacked throughout 2014/15.

As there are still many matches to be decided however, does Pellegrini’s expensively assembled side still have what it takes to nab the title for a second season in a row, or are they just too far behind a Chelsea team on a rampant path to success?

Although this particular season has certainly shown Chelsea to be the dominant side, there still remains a great portion of the campaign to be played. The Blues have by no means won it already, and as their winter dip in form frankly outlined, nothing has been decided yet in regards to who will ultimately win the league.

Having said that, Manchester City simply haven’t proved worthy of winning the title so far this season. Yes – they have had to pay witness to several key injuries throughout the campaign, namely those suffered by Sergio Aguero, but with finances so readily available and a squad that strong, City can make no valid complaints over not being able to field the right players. Chelsea too have had to contend with some key injuries to important players, but they have seemingly not held the Blues back on their course this season.

The problems at the Etihad ultimately lie deeper than those caused by injury. City may have lost only one more game than Chelsea, but as they have totalled seven draws so far in 2014/15, the fans would have surely been expecting a lot more from their side. Too many times, both in the Premier League and in Europe, City have looked lethargic, failing to play to their full potential, and sometimes even half-hearted in their attempts.

That said, even a half-hearted Manchester City side have what it takes to be successful in this league, and they haven’t achieved their solid second place just on luck alone. Pellegrini’s side remain a very strong outfit who could test the very best in Europe, even if their recent Champions League form has failed to display their complete ability as a team.

With Wilfried Bony on side now however, City have two strikers who are capable of holding the ball up efficiently, linking up successfully with their teammates, and scoring goals for fun seemingly at a drop of the hat. Both Bony and Aguero could prove the difference in the remainder of the 2014/15 campaign, so it would be distinctly unwise to rule the Citizens out just yet.

They will however have to move past a very efficient Chelsea side, who with their enviable consistency and impressive ability to see out each game, have simply looked a better team than their title rivals so far this season.
