West Ham v Southampton Betting Tips and Predictions

West Ham v Southampton predictions and football tips for today’s Premier League fixtures and the best odds for our three bets.

It's round two of the festive fixtures in the Premier League and one of the late afternoon features Southampton's clash at West Ham. The match gets underway at 5:30pm and here are our match predictions and betting tips.

West Ham v Southampton Predictions

Following a terrific start to the campaign, West Ham's season has begun to stagnate in recent weeks. The Hammers are playing some decent football on occasions, but have been absolutely ravaged by injuries to some key players. Although Andy Carroll and Enner Valencia have both returned to fitness, Slaven Bilic is likely to have to wait a few more weeks before he is able to call upon the likes of Winston Reid, Diafra Sahko and Dimitri Payet.

Form wise, West Ham are struggling at the moment and have not won a match in their last eight attempts. Although six of these results have been draws, they have only managed to score four times during this period and have been heavily reliant on keeping things tight at the back.

Opponents Southampton were in dreadful form heading into Boxing Day having only taken one point from five games and also bombing out of the League Cup to Liverpool 6-1. However, in this season of surprises, The Saints went and turned over title chasing Arsenal 4-0 and probably crushed every Christmas accumulator across the land – mine included, not that I'm bitter or anything!

To give Ronald Koeman his dues, Southampton were absolutely marvellous and never gave Arsene Wenger's men a look in. Granted Arsenal defended like they'd all had a bottle of Bucks Fizz and a turkey sandwich in the warm-up, but the likes of Shane Long and Sadio mane were absolutely superb on the night. Also spare a thought for the excellent Victor Wanyama who was awarded the man of the match award by Robbie Savage, only to have it snatched away two minutes later following a meaningless Shane Long strike. He really doesn't do himself any favours sometimes!

Heading into the clash and West Ham are priced surprisingly long at 5/2 for the win. Southampton can be backed at 13/10, with the draw on offer at 12/5.

With all due respect to both sides, I cannot see this one being a classic and it’s highly likely to be fighting it out with West Brom v Newcastle for last place on 'Match of the Day'. As previously mentioned, West Ham have only managed four goals in eight games, and Southampton had only managed two in their previous five matches before the win over Arsenal. Therefore, for my first West Ham v Southampton prediction, back the draw outright at 12/5 with Betfred and the second tip is for under 2.5 goals at 8/11 with the same bookmaker.

Finally, I'm ever hopeful there might be a goal! With this in mind, Shane Long is surely the stand-out option in the game following his brace against Arsenal. The Irishman is well-priced at 23/10 with Ladbrokes at anytime in the match, but also holds decent value at 13/2 to score the first of the game with Betfred. I'm going to stick my neck out and go with the latter.

My last West Ham v Southampton betting tip is for Shane Long to score first at the best odds of 13/2 with Betfred.
