Slaven Bilic and Steve McClaren have history together. The last time they faced each other McClaren got himself forever branded as the 'Wally with the brolly” as England crashed out of qualification for Euro 2008. It is safe to say the stakes are not so high this time for either manager.

 

So far this season West Ham have been a footballing schizophrenic. Newcastle meanwhile have created an air of optimism thanks to actually spending some money but have failed to show much on the pitch. The high point so far of the season has been the 0-0 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The low points have been the defeats against Swansea and Arsenal that were punctuated by re cards for Janmaat and Mitrovic respectively.

 

How do the bookies see this one as shaping up then. The West Ham win is available at 5/4 with bet365. The draw is available at 5/2 with betvictor and the Newcastle win comes in at the same price with the same bookmakers.

 

I described West Ham as a footballing schizophrenic earlier but this isn't to say their isn't a pattern emerging from their results and performances. Against the big teams Bilic seems to be able to set his team up to sit deep and hit the opposition on the counter-attack. Against the likes of Bournemouth and Leicester at home however, this option isn't available as the Hammers are forced to try and dominate possession.

 

In this game goes West Ham will be at home, the onus will be on them to force the game and this will be difficult for them to do. Consequently, West Ham cannot be touched here especially at odds of 5/4. With the draw and the Newcastle win priced up at 5/2 there is plenty of value in either pick. As for myself given that Newcastle don't tend to travel to London that well I'm backing the draw here for my first West Ham v Newcastle prediction.
