Should England sack Roy Hodgson before Euro 2016 gets underway?

However, as we have all seemingly been in a strikingly similar position before regarding major international tournaments and the usual frustration that follows, this particular Euro 2016 preview aims to find out if England currently have the correct manager at the helm to lead them in France next summer.

 

In light of the constant speculative circus surrounding the Three Lions and the recent disappointment this country has endured over the last decade or so, should England sack Roy Hodgson now while they still have the time, or does the F.A. in-fact have the right man for the job on their hands as we speak?

 

Well, as England usually always seem to book their place at World Cups and European Championships as the years pass by – barring Steve McClaren’s ill-fated attempts at reaching Euro 2008 of course – Wayne Rooney and co. simply haven’t over-achieved any expectation by finally qualifying for Euro 2016 next summer.

 

Hodgson’s 100% success rate in the group stages may have admittedly impressed no doubt, but England simply won a series of matches that the Three Lions were largely expected to win anyway – and that’s simply just the way it is. There is ultimately no need for over-excitement just yet.

 

In-fact, English football fans certainly have reason to be reserved in their emotions towards the England national team right about now. Roy Hodgson’s recent selections for the upcoming friendlies seem to include a few suspect names who surely won’t be present at Euro 2016 anyway, the team is partially made up of over-paid young stars who fail to grasp the magnitude of playing on the international scene – and as for the selection of Wayne Rooney as captain – well, seeing as the current Manchester United striker has had a season to forget so far in 2015/16 – Roy Hodgson’s overall decision making seems misguided at best.

 

He just doesn’t feel like a man capable of leading England to the ultimate victory in France next summer. Most Euro 2016 betting tips would indicate further disappointment for the Three Lions at the tournament, for we simply don’t have much of an idea surrounding our nation’s first choice starting XI. In reality, ever since Hodgson has been in charge of the national set-up, we never really have done. The former Fulham boss simply represents yet another ‘yes-man’ for the F.A. to potentially chew up and spit out as soon as his time eventually comes.    

 

Having said that however, there equally aren’t that many top-class alternatives out there at the moment capable of picking up where Hodgson would potentially leave off. The F.A. have nonetheless highlighted a preference for a home-grown tactician to remain in charge of the national squad – and as England arguably haven’t produced a world class manager in quite some time now – the options left on the table look relatively limited indeed.

 

At a push, Alan Pardew could potentially be considered for the job – but even that would seem a rather questionable notion with all things considered. Harry Redknapp was another name linked to the role back when Fabio Capello’s replacement was being sourced, yet he too remains a doubtful one considering his lack of top-flight managerial success in recent seasons.

 

Should the F.A. look to go foreign before Euro 2016 finally arrives though, they may still find themselves somewhat out of luck. There just doesn’t seem a standout candidate worthy of restoring pride back among the Three Lions on the international scene – and even if there were in-fact many available targets to consider – it remains doubtful that any successful coach would want to pick up England’s notorious poisoned chalice at this moment in time anyway.

 

Therefore, even if Roy Hodgson categorically fails to represent the right character for the job with England, the F.A. simply won’t sack their man any time soon. Such has been the way for England for many a year now, back to the days when the flamboyant Brian Clough was overlooked in favour of the more conservative choices. Nothing really changes it seems…

 

In the end, Euro 2016 predictions could likely see Hodgson maintain control of the Three Lions at the hotly anticipated competition next summer, regardless of whether or not he deserves to stay in the once illustrious post.
