Has Steve McClaren reached the end of the road with Newcastle?

After suffering a desperately humiliating loss at the hands of Crystal Palace last time out – a game in which Alan Pardew’s Eagles managed to put five goals past the lonely figure of Rob Elliot in the Magpies’ net – Newcastle United are a side clearly looking the impending threat of relegation right in the eye as things currently stand.

 

From the chosen starting XI looking incredibly vulnerable and ineffective on an almost week-to-week basis, to a series of strange decisions made behind the scenes at the club that have dramatically accumulated over the last few years – very little has actually gone right on Tyneside for quite worryingly sustained period of time now.

 

Many have pointed the finger of blame directly at the feet of Steve McClaren in the Magpies dug-out on the back of such an embarrassing loss to Crystal Palace, but are the problems currently afflicting the Newcastle fans really all of the manager’s making?

 

Does McClaren deserve more patience from the supporters to implement a system on Tyneside this season, or has the former England boss already run out of time in the North East? The St. James’ faithful have certainly had their say on the matter…

 

Whilst some sections of the Newcastle support does in-fact remain slightly sympathetic towards their club’s current manager…

 

 

 

The vast majority seem utterly tired of 54-year-old tactician’s approach…

 

 

 

 

There are even those who have seemingly taken progressive measures just to get rid of the former Middlesbrough, FC Twente and Derby man as soon as physically possible…

 

 

The combination of Newcastle United Football Club and the less than impressive figure of Steve McClaren ultimately never seemed right in the first place. When the appointment was made over the summer, many expected the Magpies to subsequently suffer as a result – and lo-and-behold – that is exactly what’s happening right about now.

 

Yes, it’s obviously still relatively early days for McClaren on Tyneside, and of course nearly every single Newcastle player has failed to give a proper account of themselves this season – but surely the writing remains well and truly on the wall with all things considered.

 

However, there are nonetheless those who find fault elsewhere within the current set-up at St. James’…

 

 

 

It’s certainly true that Mike Ashley has failed to properly invest in Newcastle across the entire duration of his time at the club. He may well have spent close to £50 million this summer – but as the Toon Army nearly went two whole years without seeing their team complete one permanent signing not so long ago – such an outcome hardly seems fitting in the cold light of day.

 

Ashley has seemingly cared very little about the fate of the St. James’ faithful for quite some time now. Although most Premier League sides would have sacked their current manager had they been performing as bad as Steve McClaren of late, it remains difficult to imagine Newcastle partinging ways with their main man at the helm considering Ashley’s preference for the cheap option over guaranteed quality.

 

Be that as it may, if the results simply don’t improve soon – and let’s face it, that could prove a somewhat uphill task considering both Liverpool and Tottenham await Newcastle in their next two fixtures – maybe McClaren will eventually leave St. James’ before the frustration on Tyneside becomes too much to handle.

 

The current Magpies boss is not exclusively to blame for what’s gone wrong thus far though, so in the end – perhaps Newcastle’s problems ultimately lie further up within the club’s hierarchy…
