Juventus v Barcelona preview and betting tips for the 2015 Champions League final this week, wondering if this is the final we all wanted.
When the majority of the footballing community witnessed both Barcelona and Real Madrid get drawn in separate semi-final, against Bayern Munich and Juventus respectively, many couldn’t help but want to see an all Spanish, El Clasico Champions League final.
And who could blame them? The Champions League final is a match that invariably captures the attention of all football fans from across the globe. With some of the world’s truly greatest talent on offer, two sets of opposing histories that have produced several title lifting teams throughout the years, and an intense rivalry that simply plays out like no other – the prospect of watching Barcelona take on Real Madrid on June 6th seemed like one no one could turn down.
However, as Juventus nonetheless proved more worthy finalists than Cristiano Ronaldo and co. across both semi-final legs, the footballing world will seemingly have to wait at least a year longer for such a promising proposition.
Having said that though, the plucky Italians perhaps offer us something better than we initially wished for. This final could turn out to be one of the best of its kind with both Luis Enrique’s and Maximiliano Alegri’s sides going at it – and although the El Clasico dream will likely rage on among fans of the Champions League for a great while longer – Barcelona vs. Juventus is really the final we should all be looking forward to…
Obviously the romanticised view of seeing La Liga’s two most dominating teams take on one another for the greatest prize in club football would have undoubtedly been a fantastic spectacle on paper. The media hype surrounding such a notion would have sent most football fans through the roof with excitement, even those who admittedly bare no connection to Spanish football, or even the Champions League for that matter.
In an ideal world there seemingly wouldn’t have been anything to rival such a proposition.
With all things considered though, it’s easy to forget that El Clasico derbies often turn out to be rather slow affairs that seemingly don’t progress past the tense and nervy opening stages. Barcelona and Real Madrid undoubtedly play host to the best sets of players in club football at the moment – but as such stars often don’t prioritise the pure form of the game in such encounters – these matches often turn out to be surprisingly flat games, especially in recent history.
For all the sensation, excitement and entertainment La Liga’s two powerhouses have produced in the last decade or so – either team doesn’t seem too bothered about slowing such matches down with clear diving, unnecessary fouls and constant berating of the referee.
Recently the El Clasico derby has been more like watching the NFL under the surface – the spectacle on offer is great, but as the audience is largely witnessing the play being stopped time and time again – the overall viewing experience really isn’t one you would expect to see from the talent on offer.
The main objective has arguably been to disrupt the opposition, rather than managers sending out their players to go and express themselves morally and justly, without too much focus on undermining their rivals.
Spanish football is sadly littered with such unhanding tactics across the board however, but because the aforementioned behaviour seems to go unpunished for the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona in La Liga with great success following as a result, the trend doesn’t look to be ending any time soon.
The prospect of watching Barcelona – this year’s strongest outfit in the Champions League by quite a distance – take on Juventus – the tournament’s old boys looking to restore Italian football’s reputation across the rest of Europe – therefore presents an all-round more meaningful affair and you can see our thoughts in our Juventus v Barcelona Champions League final betting tips.
Juventus are representing the whole of Serie A after all. The Italian league has dramatically fallen behind its European counterparts in recent years, so now is the perfect opportunity for the continent’s once most exciting league to finally re-stake its claim among the new Spanish challengers.
Yes, Juve are a notoriously defensive outfit – yet because there are a wide variety of different attacking options available to each manager as June 6th approaches – something in the air just seems to be pointing to a Champions League final to remember this year, regardless of the El Clasico dream ultimately falling by the wayside.
