They sorely missed the creative sparks of Ribery and Robben, as well as the dynamic Bastien Schweinsteiger in midfield as the Germans succumbed to Porto’s greater desire. Bayern’s injury list is massive at the moment, and they had just 14 fit players to choose from for the trip to Portugal. The situation took a turn for the worse after the defeat, with Munich’s club doctor and members of the department quitting their jobs “after being blamed” for the loss to Porto. Pep Guardiola was pretty candid in his summing up of the game, stating that; “We have players who were out a long time with injuries,” he said. “Their legs don't last very long.”

 

Porto have been beaten just twice in the league all season. However, facing a Bayern side who put seven past Shakhtar at the Allianz Arena will be an altogether different proposition. Porto’s 3-1 lead from the first leg will give them confidence, but you can never write off a team like Bayern Munich, despite them missing several key players. Julen Lopetegui’s men have no such injury concerns, but they are missing Alex Sandro and Danilo through suspension. Given the balance of the tie, this Bayern Munich v Porto match will be an interesting one to try and predict.

 

Like most second legs, teams will set up differently according to whether they are protecting a lead, or need to score to pull themselves back into the tie. When Munich faced Real Madrid in the Semi-Finals last year, they trailed Madrid by one goal after the first leg in Spain. In the second leg in Germany, Bayern conceded a 16th minute goal and from there on in, their tactics became increasingly ridiculous as they tried in vain to narrow the margin and got caught on the break time and time again. Pep Guardiola’s tactics can, on occasion, border on the weird, and it will be interesting to see if they go into the match with Porto in the same gung-ho manner. If they do, Porto will pick them off on the counter.

 

Porto’s tactics in the first leg were excellent as they pressed high up the pitch and gave Bayern no time to pick their passes from the back. Given the manner of the victory and the fact that Bayern need to go for the win, I expect the game to be won and lost on the counter attack. I expect Bayern will score, as they usually do at home, but I expect Porto will pick up a goal with Bayern pushing too high up the field.
