One of the shortest odds on a team to win on the opening weekend is last season’s losing Play-Off Finalists Derby who take on winning League One Play-Off side Rotherham. Only a last minute QPR goal denied Derby extra time and playing against ten men they were big favourites. Before their Wembley defeat they were in great form though, unbeaten in 8 matches and winning seven of them. Home form was just as good as they won their final 6 matches. Rotherham were impressive in securing promotion last season but this is a massive step up from League One and Derby have kept last season’s squad together well. Derby are much better going forward than at the back and didn’t keep a clean sheet in their final 6 matches, both teams also scored in their last four home games despite Derby winning each of these. Only one side scored more goals than Rotherham in League One last year so they can definitely find the net here, Derby should get 3 points though.

Nottingham Forest to Beat Blackpool and Both Teams to Score 12/5:

Two sides who have had a turbulent summer meet on the opening today so goals may be produced. Forest sold two of their top players behind the managers back and Blackpool only had 8 players a few weeks ago, a few more have arrived now. The two Forest players sold (Darlow and Lascelles) are returning on loan but things aren’t great at the City Ground. Blackpool fans are up in arms against the owner and only a miracle looks likely to keep them up. Forest have more quality here especially with Assombalonga and Antonio signing this week but they aren’t great at the back. They kept just two clean sheets in their final 16 Championship games last season and both teams scored in 6 of their final 8 games. Blackpool aren’t the best in front of goals but Forest have a new manager and may take time to settle, their quality should show though.

Preston to Beat Notts County and Both Teams to Score 13/5:

Finally to a League One game between two sides who had contrasting seasons. County struggled in a relegation clash for long periods last year while Preston lost in the League One Play-Off Semis. Simon Grayson’s Preston looked strong throughout last seen and nowhere more so than Deepdale where they were unbeaten in their final 13 matches. Five of their last six home games saw both teams score though, with Preston also winning 5 in that time. Away form was a massive issue for Notts County and they won just one of their final 9 matches on the road. Both teams scored in County’s final 5 away games so they can find the net, Preston are the better team though and that should show.
