Jose Mourinho is Liking What He’s Seeing

Chelsea can truly enjoy the international break as it enters this two-week period as one of the top four clubs in the Premier League. The Blues find themselves only slightly below frontrunners Arsenal and Liverpool in the standings. And for that, Jose Mourinho couldn’t be any more pleased.

The main man of the Blues’ brain trust was particularly pleased with the squad’s recent triumph against Norwich. Chelsea’s 3-1 win against the Canaries was the team’s most impressive “away” outing so far this season. This was huge, as the club endured two draws and a loss in its first three away games. The victory didn’t come easy, though, as the matchup saw Norwich put up a gallant fight. The first half ended with the Blues up by a single point from an Oscar goal from inside of the box. Halfway through the second half, Anthony Pilkington evened the contest by scoring from short range. Norwich didn’t let up; however, Eden Hazard and Willian Borges Da Silva happened. The 22 year-old Hazard put the Canaries in peril as he made a goal from the center of the box to break the tie. Willian then put the final nail in the coffin (his first-ever goal for the club) as he put Chelsea above Norwich 3-1 with only five minutes left in the match. Mourinho’s crew was able to pull a remarkable victory before the start of the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers.

One takeaway from the game was that it somehow felt as vindication for Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese manager has been receiving a bit of flak for his decision-making as of late. Nobody questioned him for bringing in Hazard and Willian in the game in a timely manner, though, since his faith in the two paid off handsomely. Mourinho praised both young players for their tremendous performances. He especially lauded Willian, who soldiered on during the game despite being injured that week.

So far, Chelsea holds victories against Fulham, Aston Villa, and Hull. When the Blues come back from the break, they’ll be going up against Cardiff. You can chalk this up as yet another win for Chelsea, as the club will be playing this game at Stamford Bridge, where it stands undefeated during this season. Chelsea won’t play another away game until November, when the squad will go head-to-head with Newcastle. This matchup will reveal whether the Blues are now completely over their away-game woes or they just got “lucky” in their last game before the break. But right now, as the world turns its attention to the World Cup Qualifiers, Jose Mourinho is certain that he’s got a good thing going with this Chelsea team.
