The Champions League group stage is over and the draw for the last 16 takes place on December 20^th but who will teams want to avoid?

The group winners are seeded for the last 16 draw and cannot play each other, any other team from their own country or the team they met in the group stages from the unseeded group of runners up.

The teams that immediately stand out from the unseeded pot are Arsenal, Real Madrid and AC Milan but Real Madrid will be the ones all teams want to avoid. There is a couple of potentially massive draws for Real Madrid, namely Manchester United and Bayern Munich but all parties will want to avoid such a tough ask this early in the knock-out stages.

Barcelona will be the team all the unseeded sides will want to avoid, they could draw Porto, Arsenal, AC Milan or Galatasaray in the last 16 with Arsenal keen to avoid another meeting with Messi and company.

PSG strolled through their group with 15 points (the most of any of the qualifying teams) but there looks no easy task for the affluent club from the French capital. Celtic would be the ‘easiest’ tie on paper, but try telling Celtic fans that. PSG would also fancy their chances against the likes of Galatasaray and Valencia.

Manchester United are England’s main hope of bringing the trophy back to these shores and they will hope to avoid Real Madrid in the last 16 draw. They could draw Porto, AC Milan, Shakhtar, Valencia or Celtic and realistically would expect to progress against any of those sides.

Our tip to win the tournament, Bayern Munich (already advised at 14/1), will also want to avoid Real Madrid in the last 16. Bayern are already storming away with the Bundesliga back in Germany and picked up 13 points in the group stage from a potential 18. If the draw is kind to Bayern then they could go all the way to the final for the third time in four seasons.
