Jose Mourinho has a pretty mixed record against Pep Guardiola in their La Liga meetings, but this will be a more level test of their abilities. There’s little between the two Manchester clubs, and the managers have spent big to mould their squads. There’s so much anticipation around this derby, it’s expected to tell us a lot about these two teams. The Red Devils have home advantage, but they’ll be expected to play like an away side. Guardiola’s City will dominate possession, while United bide their time and try to counter. It’s a very interesting clash of styles.

City were dealt a hammer blow when Sergio Aguero was ruled out of the derby. He was handed a three game ban for elbowing West Ham’s Winston Reid. The Argentine started the campaign in fantastic form, he could have made the difference in this game. Guardiola doesn’t really have much to call upon in reserve, only young forward Kelechi Iheanacho. He could reshuffle his pack and switch Nolito or Raheem Sterling in to the middle, but that could cause problems elsewhere. Neither of those two are considered clinical finishers, so City might be lacking cutting edge going in to this clash.

Mourinho’s rivalry with Guardiola will be the focus of this game, although he’s not the only one with a grudge to settle. Zlatan Ibrahimovic had a pretty troubled time with the manager when they were together at Barcelona. The Swede was a massive signing for the Catalan club, but he never settled under Guardiola. Ibra even went as far as to label him, “a spineless coward”.
