Euro 2016 Player Profile: Graziano Pelle of Italy

When Italy arrived in France for Euro 2016, few fancied their chances of reaching the latter stages. Tomorrow they will line up in a Quarter-Final clash against Germany, however, having deposed defending champions Spain with a clinical performance in the last round.

Key to their success has been the form of Southampton striker Graziano Pelle, who has scored two goals and linked-up well with the equally excellent Eder. This is something of a redemption for the Saints man, who struggled for consistency last season and has done throughout his career.

A towering and cultured striker, Pelle started out his career with Italian side Lecce as a youth player, enjoying loan spells with Catania, Crotone and AC Cesena as he strived to make his mark. After struggling to establish himself as a Serie A player, he moved to AZ Alkmaar in a permanent deal worth £4.5 million. Despite a relatively disappointing return of 14 goals in 78 games for the Dutch side, he was signed by Parma and returned to his homeland.

His time at Parma was largely unhappy, however, characterised by poor form, a single goal in 12 outings and loans spells with Sampdoria and Feyenoord. It was during his return to Holland that Pelle finally found his groove, however, plundering 27 goals in 29 games before securing a permanent move to De Kuip. He scored a further 23 goals in 28 appearances during his first full season with the club, which in turn attracting the attention of Southampton who spent £8.25 million on the striker as a replacement for Rickie Lambert.

Throughout a disjointed career, Pelle has showcased moments of form and brilliance that underline his enigmatic qualities. Few players possess his combination of power, pace and strength while he is also excellent in the air and a cultured finisher with both feet. When he is fully focused, he is also an outstanding target man who can bring others into play and build attacks.

While inconsistency remains his main weakness as a player, Italy have found a way to harness his strengths by affording him a strike partner and delivering him quality service on the counter-attack. So long as this continues, Pelle may yet have a pivotal influence on the tournament and could fire Italy to a second consecutive European Championship final.
