Southampton v Man Utd Betting Tips and Predictions

Weekend football tips for the Premier League match between Southampton and Man United with free football predictions.

After their midweek defeat in the Champions League to Dutch Champions PSV, Louis Van Gaal has the task of motivating his players for a performance away to Southampton. With the horrific injury to Luke Shaw visibly affecting United’s players in Holland, they will need to regroup if they want to gain anything from a tricky tie on the South coast, our football tipster has picked his best three football betting tips.

Southampton v Man Utd Predictions

Before their Champions League encounter on Tuesday, United’s players were full of confidence after outplaying their bitter rivals Liverpool last weekend. United claimed a confidence boosting 3-1 victory, and their new £36m man Anthony Martial got off to a dream debut by notching the all-important third goal to seal a famous win for United.

However, on Tuesday against PSV, Luke Shaw succumbed to a robust challenge from Hector Moreno and was stretchered off with a double fracture to his leg after just 15 minutes of his full Champions League debut. United had started the game brightly, but after the incident it appeared to take them a while to refocus on the game.

Louis Van Gaal saw the Red’s dominate possession, but their second half performance was sloppy and they conceded two very poor goals to a side that they should, on the balance of play, have beaten comfortably. Southampton will pose a similar threat on the counter, and Man United will do well to avoid making the same mistakes as they did on Tuesday.

However, Anthony Martial was arguably United’s standout performer, continuing on where he left off against Liverpool. Wayne Rooney still appears to be struggling for fitness, and Martial will almost certainly start for the Red Devils after his decent display in Holland.

With Luke Shaw out for the season, Daley Blind looks likely to vacate the centre back role in favour of Marcos Rojo with Blind moving to left back. The Dutchman lacks pace and will not give as much attacking threat as the 20 year old English full back.

Southampton have no European football this season after crashing out of the Europa League Qualifiers to FC Midtjylland, and Ronald Koeman’s side will be fresh after an entire seven days to rest after their lacklustre 0-0 draw with West Brom last weekend.

Southampton certainly haven’t started the season as well as they did last term, gaining just one win, three draws as well as a defeat in the opening five games of the new Premier League season.

Maybe they were gearing up to balance domestic and European football and went slightly lightly through pre-season, but the Saints look a shadow of their former selves. However, with the prospect of picking up a famous win against Man United, this should be the game where we see the real Southampton.

With the fans of each team a little down heartened by the performances, which team will be the one to please their fans come the final whistle?

United will have to reshuffle their back line and I can see this affecting their game. They conceded extremely bad goals to PSV, and I think we’ll see at least one Southampton goal on the counter attack.

The Saints have conceded five goals from their five games this season, including a pretty embarrassing 3-0 home defeat to Everton. I think United will make chances and will inevitably grab at least one as well.

My first Premier League prediction for Southampton v Man United is for both teams to score. Odds of Evens can be found with Betfair.

I have a good feeling about Martial. Despite the unnerving comparisons to Arsenal and France legend Thierry Henry, Martial looks to be handling the pressure admirably and has showed quality in all departments so far.

My second football betting tip for Southampton v Man United is for Anthony Martial to score anytime at odds of 13/5 with 888sport.

Both teams would obviously love the points, but I can once again see United dominate possession with Southampton looking to catch them out on the break. Ultimately I think this is an even affair and I cannot see any team walking away with all three points. I would say that this has a score draw written all over it, most likely a 1-1 draw.

My third and final Southampton v Man Utd prediction is for the match to finish as a draw. Odds of 12/5 can be found with Betfred.
