Malmo v Celtic Predictions:
After the perfect possible start last week, Celtic had all but one foot in the Champions League proper following goals in the first ten minutes from Leigh Griffiths and Nir Bitton. However, last season’s Scottish champions were ruthlessly punished by former loanee Jo Inge Berget as he seized on some sloppy defending to score the all-important away strike for the Swedish side. The goal sparked Celtic into life and they dominated the match for long periods and added a third in the second half and restore their two goal cushion. However, lightning struck twice and Berget scored with literally the last kick of the game to cut the deficit to 3-2 and give Malmo massive lifeline ahead of the second leg.
For Ronny Deila, the final whistle will have come as an absolute sickener despite his side’s slim advantage. Celtic have now leaked seven goals in their last four matches and this defensive frailty could well cost them a place in Europe’s premier competition. The flip side to this is Celtic are actually scoring lots of goals as well and will certainly have their chances against Malmo. Striker Leigh Griffiths has started the season in prolific fashion and has now scored five goals in his last four matches.
Heading into the match and there is barely a hair separating the two sides in the eyes of the bookies. Malmo are marginal favourites for the win at a best price of 13/8. Celtic are a touch longer at 9/5, with the draw on offer at 13/5.
As with most matches, the first goal on Tuesday night will be absolutely crucial and it will be interesting to see the tactics Ronny Deila adopts in the early stages of the match. In a nutshell, I think Celtic are going out. Malmo overturned a two goal deficit against the free-scoring Red Bull Salzburg in the last round by thrashing the Austrian side 3-0 – For those of you that remember, Salzburg ran amok in Celtic Park last season beating Deila’s men 3-1. Furthermore, Malmo have also won their last three league matches at home, a run that included a 2-1 over Swedish league leaders IFK Goteborg. I hope I’m wrong, but if you’re asking me to put my money where my mouth is, I would back Malmo to win for my football betting tips.
