Juventus v Barcelona in the Champions League final 2015 takes place this week and we have got a series of previews and predictions for the match.
Whilst Barcelona’s ever-unstoppable Lionel Messi will likely capture all the headlines next week as the most exciting prospect of the Champions League final, Juventus nevertheless have an old, reliable ace up their sleeve that often leads them to the ultimate prize.
Juventus v Barcelona Preview Champions League Final
Andrea Pirlo still proves to one of the best of his kind even at the grand of age of 36-years-old. He continues to go down as a first team regular for Maximiliano Alegri’s side, and his unrivalled qualities on the ball have only served to strengthen his overall game as his career has played out.
Despite being rather unceremoniously left behind by his former employers, AC Milan, back in 2011, the gifted Italian maestro has won seven individual trophies since leaving the San Siro, whereas the Rossoneri have lifted nothing in that time.
The Juventus no. 21 therefore has to go down as one of the best players of his era – yet because Barcelona certainly approach the Champions League final as everybody’s favoured victors – does Andrea Pirlo still have what it takes to steal the show on the biggest stage in the 2015 Champions League final?
The Italians are certainly hopeful…
Although many things remain uncertain as football’s most illustrious club tournament final grows nearer, it must still be said that the classy midfield dynamo proves to be an excellent asset for his respective teams on his day.
Either for his current club Juventus, or for the Italian national side, Pirlo has been able to conduct a major influence on proceedings time and time again. He is a player that has simply been there and done it already. Throughout his long-term career, the Italian international has dominated domestically in Serie A, gone home victorious at the final stages in Europe, and successfully lifted the World Cup in 2006.
And that is because very few of his counterparts in the modern game seem be able to emulate his performances out on the pitch. Andrea Pirlo is of an older breed of footballers. You couldn’t call him a frequent offender in the diving department, he seems to read the game like no one else – and even though he often performs his duties in the heart of gritty midfield battles on a week-to-week basis – the Italian manages to play with sheer elegance and class in his style to an impressively frequent level.
When the experienced pro gets control of the ball in the middle of the park, it is almost as if the no. 21 were orchestrating a musical symphony, rather than bustling about in an attempt to force the play. Even in 2015, he has unrivalled vision across the pitch, unheard of composure in nearly every circumstance, and the ability to make things happen the way he wants them to.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale ultimately proved unable to counter-act Pirlo’s flow across both legs in the semi-final, so just maybe Barcelona will be rather surprisingly humbled by the same proposition and you can see whether we are backing Juventus in our Champions League 2015 final predictions. In still operating at the very highest level at 36-years-old, the reliable Juventus man has somewhat overshadowed the likes of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard in their later careers, with Pirlo not yet being tempted by a financially viable move to the MLS.
For that reason alone – he remains a relevant threat for Luis Enrique’s side, and one they would be foolish to underestimate.
Yes, 2014/15 has so far proven to be an unquestionable success for Barcelona in their hunt for silverware, yes, their defence has performed to a truly consistent level across the current campaign, and of course, Enrique’s dangerously threatening attack-line has certainly outshone all their rivals in the rest of Europe this season.
But have Barcelona been pitted up against someone as uniquely gifted as Andrea Pirlo recently? – No.
The experienced Italian therefore must be seen in a truly promising light before going into next Saturday’s final, and as the ever composed creative midfielder doesn’t seem to be letting up any time soon, Andrea Pirlo might just prove worthy of stealing the show for his side yet again.
