Would Man City be any better off with Pep Guardiola on board?

When news of Pep Guardiola’s potential arrival at the Etihad eventually broke this season, the 2015/16 campaign must have seemingly transformed into a somewhat surreal one for the current main man down at Manchester City – Manuel Pellegrini.

The Chilean tactician may have certainly spent a ridiculous sum of cash during his stint with the Citizens in recent seasons, but seeing as the Beautiful Game is invariably played out on the field as opposed to on paper, such a notion doesn’t necessarily mean Manchester City should turn into the undisputable champions of England almost overnight.

A large portion of the current campaign still remains to be played of course, and as 2015/16 has arguably represented the tightest season in recent memory, everything is still to be played for in terms of the ultimate title race.

However, as Manuel Pellegrini looks set to lose his job to Pep Guardiola no matter what the outcome this term, would Manchester City really be any better off with the current Bayern Munich boss on board?

Well, when it comes to building excitement merely from his position in the technical box, Pep Guardiola seemingly represents the ideal candidate to step in at a club as financially secure as City. He is young, boasts a track record that few of his managerial counterparts could ever come close to replicating, and has a reputation capable of taking the Premier League by storm.

Manchester City’s growing popularity in the modern era would be boosted even further with Guardiola firmly at the helm, and as his time spent at both Barcelona and Bayern Munich would have provided an abundance of important contacts to call upon in future seasons, the Citizens would seriously benefit with a manager like the one in question involved.

People would be expecting the likes of Lionel Messi, Thomas Muller, Robert Lewandowski and Andres Iniesta to be turning up at the Etihad sooner rather than later – and as Manchester City ultimately watch over enough resources to make those kind of dream transfers happen at some stage down the line – maybe the Premier League club could find themselves with irrefutable pulling power with Guardiola pulling the strings.

The former Spanish international would also likely adopt his famed tiki-taka approach should he eventually end up at Manchester City next season, which would only signal promising news for the Etihad faithful – as well as fans of the Premier League in general.

However, although Pep Guardiola has the name to cause excitement in and around any team operating within the English top-flight this season, it remains to be seen just how good the Spaniard can be when the going gets tough.

The level of competition among the Premier League will be more intense than anything he has ever likely witnessed before – and although City certainly have enough money to back their next carefully selected manager – getting the team to perform week-in-week-out at the Etihad will take serious skill at the end of the day.

Guardiola almost represents the luckiest manager in world football from some perspectives, for although he has admittedly succeeded wherever he has gone, both Bayern Munich and Barcelona arguably provided him with the best available squad in Europe at each respective stage in his career. At a team such as City, such a luxury may prove somewhat harder to come by.

The former Nou Camp favourite also possesses one of the best track records within the Champions League among his contemporaries, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Manchester City will thrive in Europe as a result of his immediate appointment at their club.  He is yet to win the trophy with Bayern Munich of course, who arguably host a more reliable and technically superior side than Manchester City with all things considered.

So then, although there are many promising factors indicating this to be a smart move for City in the not too distant future, Guardiola simply isn’t guaranteed to bring success at the Etihad when all is said and done.

Yet with all the money on offer behind the scenes however, surely it would only be a matter of time before the boardroom staff at City finally start realising their dreams with someone like Pep Guardiola in charge…
