World Cup 2014 tips and betting predictions for betting on who will be the top African team at the tournament this summer in Brazil.
While Pele’s prediction of an African team winning the World Cup by the year 2000 didn’t come true, it’s obvious that the continent has come a long way over the years, culminating with Ghana coming within a penalty kick of reaching the semi finals in 2010. So who among the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Algeria will carry African hopes this time?

Looking at the latest betting odds for the team to progress furthest, the Ivory Coast are the favourites at 6/4. That was always likely considering the amount of Premier League players they have such as the Toure brothers and Cheick Tiote, as well as ex-Chelsea striker Didier Drogba. However they have not gotten out of the group stage with many of this team before, failing in 2006 as well as 2010, although their group opponents of Japan, Greece and Columbia should not be as difficult as previous challenges.
Ghana can be backed 11/4 in the top African team at the World Cup betting odds, and their history is impressive over the last two tournaments, reaching the second round in 2006 and the quarter final in 2010. While some players like Michael Essien are past their peak, he also missed some matches in 2010 so this is a team that is truly more than the sum of their parts. With a group of Germany, Portugal and U.S.A though, it’s hard to see them repeating their 2010 heroics.
Nigeria (7/2) are appearing at their first World Cup since 2002 but are a long way from their heyday of 1994 when they scared Italy in the quarter finals. However with Argentina the best team in their World Cup group by far, the Super Eagles can battle with Bosnia and Iran for second place.
Cameroon (10/1) are an interesting proposition and one of our World Cup betting tips for top African team. They are a team that captured the world’s hearts in 1990 and while they aren’t quite as talented as that team, they have plenty of top-level experience, especially in Samuel Eto’o, along with Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Stephan M’Bia. While Brazil should win this group comfortably, I can see the Indomitable Lions having a scrap with Croatia and Mexico for the last qualifying spot.
Finally, Algeria (16/1) have a pretty good history at the World Cup, especially in being robbed of a knock-out place in 1982, while also holding England to a draw in 2010 and only conceding two goals in total over their three group games. Unfortunately for them Russia and Belgium should have this group all to themselves, while even South Korea should be too strong for Les Fennics.
So who would I back to go furthest in my World Cup tips? While I’m not seeing a potential finalist or maybe even semi-finalist among the teams, things do seem set up for Ivory Coast to better their record, especially with a much easier group than they are used to. If you’re feeling adventurous, I like the look of Cameroon; they have a veteran team and I could see them getting out of the group stage at least. From there on they could get a favourable draw, and of course they may only have to grind out a win on penalties. A quarter final place is not out of the question.
