Fast forward to today and the roles are almost reversed.  Wigan are in fifth position under Uwe Rosler and in good shape for a swift return to the top flight, while also defending manfully the FA Cup that they won last season.  As for Leeds, however, it’s all fallen apart in the last few months with ownership problems, manager sackings/reinstatements, and players not being paid.  One win in their last 10 games illustrates how much the team have been affected by the machinations around them.

I’m not sure that Wigan could have better picked opposition that they would want to face, and all signs point to a comfortable home win (4/7 Coral).  While they haven’t scored as many goals as their top six companions (53), Leeds have allowed 59 into their net, joint-worst of teams outside the relegation zone.

Don’t expect Leeds to offer much at the other end either.  Ross McCormack is the only shining light, and even he is struggling, especially with some missed penalty kicks lately, including a crucial miss against Charlton in a 0-1 defeat on Tuesday night.  It’s hard to see where the next goal is coming from with this team and a Wigan win to nil looks almost nailed on (11/8 Bet365).

Against such a demoralised team, there will be spaces all over the field for potential Wigan goalscorers, and while they don’t have one stand-out forward, they spread the goals around the team.  Man Utd loanee Nick Powell is leading the scoring charts with 12 (7/5 anytime Bet Victor), however I like the value for midfielder Jordi Gomez as one of our football betting tips who is always dangerous from set pieces especially and can strike from long distance too (12/5).  Keep an eye out too for striker Nicky Maynard (13/10), who is getting back on track after a move to Cardiff hasn’t worked out as hoped and has scored three goals in his time on loan at the club.
