Despite previously going down as everyone’s clear favourites to win the Premier League title outright this season, Manuel Pellegrini and his insanely star-studded Manchester City outfit have nonetheless drawn criticism after losing back-to-back matches in the English top-flight.
Consecutive losses to West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur may admittedly fail to signal much of a crisis within the grand scheme of things – but as the Etihad faithful currently pay witness to a starting XI worth over £300 million in transfer fees alone – the level of flexibility surrounding Pellegrini must remain somewhat tighter compared with every other team currently operating in the league.
Although the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea must also go down as some of England’s biggest spenders throughout the modern era, the pressure facing Manchester City simply takes on a new level of intensity thanks to the manner in which they’ve propelled themselves from mere Premier League survival hopefuls, to arguably the strongest side in the land.
However, although the team’s most recent domestic outings have failed to include much positivity for their fans in the cold light of day, there are nonetheless several important factors continuously working in Pellegrini’s favour.
So then, is the Premier League title itself still ultimately Manchester City’s to lose?
No matter which way you look at it, the Citizens remain extremely well placed to end the league term triumphantly in 2015/16, even in light of their current second place position behind rivals Manchester United. The Premier League’s most shameless spenders seemingly bought themselves one hand on the illustrious trophy after an incredibly busy transfer period achieved throughout the summer.
Via the high profile captures of Raheem Sterling, Nicolas Otamendi and Kevin de Bruyne, Manchester City have simply strengthened their entire squad from every angle possible. They may well have spent way over the odds in order to secure such a highly coveted trio – but in those three aforementioned names alone – the level of potential on offer is pretty promising to say the very least.
The signing of former Aston Villa star, Fabian Delph, remains a somewhat surprise decision from Pellegrini’s point of view however – perhaps the need to add more home-grown players into the current City set-up has become somewhat more of a priority at the club this term, who knows?
Either way, when you consider the fact that Manuel Pellegrini already had the likes of Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure, David Silva and Sergio Aguero to call upon across the course of the 2015/16 campaign, no honest Manchester City fan could accuse their side of not having enough quality options on board this season. Even though the game is notoriously played out on the pitch as opposed to on paper, surely the Citizens will literally have to throw the title away this term in order to avoid finishing the season as champions?
Elsewhere Manchester United look strong at the moment of course, but the level of strength in depth at Old Trafford in no way compares to the riches boasted at the Etihad. Pellegrini also has no reason to fear the likes of Arsenal or Chelsea any time soon, considering each team’s lack of dramatic squad building over the summer, and as for previous title challengers of yesteryear in the shape of Liverpool – perhaps the least said about Brendan Rodgers’ side and the Premier League title, the better…
Overall Manchester City must remain confident despite the club’s disappointing recent run of form. This is a team capable of dominating the English game for a long while to come regards of how the collective footballing community in this country ultimately feels about such a notion – and although it remains hard to imagine City transferring their domestic success into the Champions League any time soon – Pellegrini’s men could theoretically take Europe by storm should they set their minds to it this campaign.
In the end, City have the strongest set of players, a fan-base willing their side on to even greater achievements this term, and more than enough resources left in the bank just in case things go horribly wrong halfway through the season. In other words – if Manuel Pellegrini fails to do the business with his newly formed squad this season – he should arguably never attempt managing in the Premier League ever again…
