Everton’s recent 3-0 win over a hapless Newcastle side and 2-1 win over QPR may be shining the club in a much more positive light this week, but as 2014/15 has hardly been a vintage year for Toffees fans to remember thus far, there are still those within the Goodison Park faithful who are seemingly growing impatient with Roberto Martinez and his future as Everton manager.
The transformation from last season has been dramatic to say the least. Throughout the previous campaign, Everton truly played some blinding stuff. They bamboozled numerous Premier League defences with their quick plays and efficient movements, and proved more than deadly in the final third with the likes of Romelu Lukaku doing the business up top.
This term however, things just haven’t gone quite as swimmingly. Perhaps because of the added burden of Thursday night Europa League fixtures, Roberto Martinez’ side have lacked that all-important cutting edge so far – which is unceremoniously highlighted by their current place position in the Premier League.
The best odds for Everton to finish in the top 10 are 9/2 at Coral.
In light of such a turnaround in fortunes, should Everton fans continue to keep the faith in Roberto Martinez as their team ploughs on for the remainder of the season, or is it simply too important to get rid of the former Wigan boss now before the Toffees’ fortunes becomes truly irreversible?
With all things considered, the latter statement simply comes across as that bit too knee-jerk, and that bit too premature to be given any real credence. Roberto Martinez is a solid manager – there is no doubt about that. The Spaniard is more than positive with his weekly team selections, he seems to adopt a generally entertaining approach that should be commended by the Goodison Park faithful – and more importantly than anything else – the 41-year-old tactician comes across as someone capable of getting the best out of his players, even if his current circumstances aren’t exactly favourable at the minute.
Everton really haven’t been that bad when everything is taken into account either. It’s only through comparisons of the performances from last season that the fans have reason to be disappointed. There still remains a large portion of the Premier League campaign to be played after all – and as Everton normally see out their annual proceedings on a high in most cases – there’s no reason to suggest why this year should be any different for Roberto Martinez and his current Toffees side.
Having said that though, that doesn’t mean that certain aspects of Everton’s approach don’t need tweaking somewhat. Romelu Lukaku – perhaps burdened by the pressure of his permanent big money move to Goodison Park at the beginning of the season – must become that bit more deadly in front of goal to one day be considered a truly world class striker. He seems to need a lot of chances to fall in his lap before he fires one in the back of the net and in the consistently testing realms of Premier League football, such a luxury can rarely be afforded on a regular basis.
Everton’s defence may also be in need of a tune up throughout the approaching summer months as well. The likes of Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka have been holding their team back somewhat this season, so perhaps some new defensive additions to Martinez’ back-line will need to be brought in to ensure that the team’s overall level of performance doesn’t drop so dramatically two seasons in a row.
With all that in mind however, Everton’s problems are hardly irreversible and calls for Roberto Martinez to completely rethink his strategy with the Toffess remain questionable at best. With a top ten domestic finish still not completely out of the picture – Everton will likely be in much better spirits comes the end of the season with their current main man in the dug-out still firmly in control over proceedings at Goodison Park.
