Premier League Predictions – West Brom v Manchester City.

City wrapped up their summer spending in a timely fashion this summer. In addition to Sterling, Fabian Delph and Patrick Roberts have been added to the Sky Blues’ ranks. Some cynics would say only to bolster their quota of Englishmen in the squad.

However, for those people who have seen Patrick Roberts play, he is not dubbed ‘The English Messi’ for nothing. His skill set and stature are instantly reminiscent of the Argentinian legend, however, 18 year old Roberts looks set to miss out on the squad altogether as Manuel Pellegrini opts for experience over enthusiasm.

The other City new boy Fabian Delph also looks set to miss out the first few weeks of the season as he is struggling with a hamstring injury. He should probably get used to watching on from the sidelines.

Manchester City looked to be lacking enthusiasm and fight last season, and with the exception of Sterling, their ageing squad has not exactly been improved. The coming season will be an extremely interesting one for Pellegrini and his squad given the significant investment and improvement of Arsenal and Manchester United.

West Brom will be looking for a better season than their 13th placed finish last time around. However, under the stewardship of Tony Pulis, the Baggies are always likely to be organised and functional, but lack that cutting edge needed for a top half finish.

Pulis has bolstered also bolstered the ranks with some home grown talent. James Chester, Rickie Lambert and James McClean have all been signed, and all three will no doubt be in and around the first team come kick off.

WBA have also managed to keep hold of their highly rated striker Saido Berahino after being strongly linked with a move to Spurs.

As always with season openers, friendly form is hardly going to predict the outcome of a competitive match. The overwhelming aura of this Man City squad is one of stagnation and I believe that the West Brom game will prove an incredibly tricky fixture for their highly paid and underperforming stars.

I think Manchester City will win, but it will be hard fought. They have so much quality throughout the team, but so often last season they lacked that extra bit of motivation to mount a serious title challenge.
