The Best Goals of Euro 2016 So Far

With the Euro 2016 Quarter Finals now upon us, it is the ideal time to look back on the highlights (and, for England fans, lowlights) of the competition so far. One of the most interesting points has been the plethora of late goals in the tournament, while the quality of some of these strikes have been simply breath-taking.

With this in mind, let's take a look at some of the best and most memorable goals from the tournament so far. Here are our particular favourites and top picks…

Alvaro Morata, Spain vs. Turkey

Euro 2016 goals of the tournament

Let's start with our third favourite, which came during Spain's comprehensive 3-0 defeat of Turkey in Group D. The third goal was a thing of beauty, following a 23-pass team move that mesmerised the Turkish defence and captured the Spanish philosophy in microcosm.

The end to the move was simplistic and stunning in equal measure, as Andreas Iniesta split the defence with a wonderful pass to marauding full-back Jordi Alba. The left-back's cross was converted by Morata's tap-in, and while the Real Madrid striker may have been marginally offside he capped a truly spellbinding move.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal v Hungary

Next up is Ronaldo, who despite flattering to deceive so far has still managed to score or assist four of the five goals that Portugal have scored so far at Euro 2016. His first goal against Hungary was particularly memorable, while it also came at a crucial time with the Portuguese trailing 2-1.

After a neat passing move, midfield João Mário collected the ball in space on the right flank before delivering a low delivery that was whipped across the penalty area. From here, Ronaldo arrived at the near post, pivoted and flicked an audacious back-heel beyond the despairing Gabor Kiraly. Cue parity and a wild celebration that was worthy of such an instinctive and brilliant finish.

Naturally, there’s time for Ronaldo to contribute once again with Poland next up in the Quarter Final, and Ronaldo to score anytime will be hotly tipped.

Dimitri Payet, France v Romania

Our number one choice comes from the opening game, when hosts France entertained Romania at the Stade de France. With the match poised at one apiece entering the 87th minute, it appeared as though the hosts were set for a disappointing start to the tournament and one that may come back to haunt them.

Enter Dimitri Payet, who collected a high ball in the inside right channel before cutting inside on his supposedly weaker foot. Suddenly 25 yards from goal, he unleashed a rocket of a strike that exploded into the top corner before the goal keeper even had a chance to adjust his feet. With minimal back-lift and unerring accuracy, this goal was superbly executed and arguably the most dramatic strike so far.
