The visitors started the season in good fashion under manager Mauricio Pochettino, who’s side currently sit 9^th in the league at present. However, their form of late hasn’t been quite what is was in the early parts of the campaign and after the recent loss of director Nicola Cortese, Pochettino’s future also seems in doubt which means things could get a little worse for Southampton before too long.

Having said that Sunderland are not able to boast the kind of home form that will strike fear into the hearts of their opponents, winning only 2 fixtures at the Stadium of Light scoring 10 goals but more worryingly conceding 17. A more encouraging statistic for Sunderland fans is that the black cats are unbeaten in the last 5 renewals of this fixture and have won 3 of them, most recently in the Capital One Cup back in November 2013.

From a betting tips point of view this looks a tough fixture to call, both sides have enough relevant form in which to build a case on. The goings on in the background at Southampton are certainly not a positive for the club at the present and if having a negative effect on the dressing room they could find themselves at the mercy of what looks an improving Sunderland side.
