This match is vital for both teams involved, for very different reasons. Sunderland are fighting to retain their Premier League status for another season, and Arsenal are fighting to stay in the top four and qualify for the Champions League.

After beating Norwich 3-0 last week, Sunderland have really got themselves within touching distance of safety now, they’re just a point behind Norwich now with a game in hand, and will be desperate to keep the pressure on them, as well as stay ahead of their rivals Newcastle. At least one team from the North East of England will be relegated, and Sunderland would love to help contribute to Newcastle’s demise.

 

Sunderland have Jermain Defoe, and he’s almost the sole reason they are back in contention to stay up. Only Sergio Aguero has more goals in the Premier League in 2016 than Jermain, and his goals have really made a difference to a generally goal shy team. Sam Allardyce has made his team much harder to beat in recent weeks, by having Jan Kirchoff sit as a 3rd defensive midfielder alongside Lee Cattermole and Yann M’Vila, but this does mean they can lack a little firepower going the other way.

 

Arsenal are unbeaten at the Stadium of Light since 2009, and have won their last four league visits to Wearside. They themselves have their own worries ahead of this match. Their top four status looked in serious threat a few weeks back as their form really hit a rough patch, they threw away a chance to challenge for the title, but with no cup competitions to play in, all their attention must go to the league now, and aiming for the top three to avoid a Champions League play-off match next August.

 

They despatched West Bromwich Albion with ease on Thursday night as Tony Pulis’ men look like they’re already on their summer holidays, but this match will be a much stiffer test for Arsene Wengers’ men.

 

My first Sunderland vs Arsenal prediction is going to be Arsenal to win and BTTS. Sunderland will definitely go forward more as Sam Allardyce does need to start winning more matches, and they will battle hard against Arsenal. Arsenal aren’t bullied around on the pitch as much as they used to be, and a lack of goals has been what has stopped them challenging for the title this season. Alexis Sanchez finally seems to be in some good form, and I can see them finishing the season strongly, but there are still some question marks over defensive concentration, especially from set pieces, so I do think Sunderland will score.

My second Premier League betting tip for Sunderland vs Arsenal is going to be Lee Cattermole to be shown a card. He was shown his first yellow card in 10 matches against Norwich last week, which must be some sort of record for him. He was shown an incredible 14 yellow cards last season in just 28 matches.
