Roma vs Porto Betting Tips, Predictions and Preview

Porto vs Roma predictions and Champions League betting tips for tonight’s first leg of their qualifying round – which of these giants will make the group stage?

2004 Champions league winners Porto face Luciano Spalletti’s Roma in one of the most intriguing Champions league ties this week and here are some betting tips for the important game.

Porto vs Roma Preview

Porto

The Portuguese club regularly make it in to the Champions League group stage after only missing out once in the last thirteen years and they are very experienced at this level. Their squad has a mixture of youth and experience with old heads such as Iker Casillas and Maxi Pereira at the back and going forward they have Andre Andre and Andre Silva who are both exciting players who have started the season of well. They both played in the 3-1 victory over Rio Ave at the weekend and this was Porto’s first competitive game of the season. It’s been a positive transfer window for them as they haven’t lost any of their big name players and have been able to recruit particularly in the defensive positions. This is something that they need to strengthen as they only kept one clean sheet in six Champions League games last season and that was at home to Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Roma

Club captain and legend Francesco Totti will be going into his 25th season as a Roma player and although he may not have a big part to play on the pitch, he will be a huge help to everyone in the dressing room as he enters his last season before retiring. It has been a busy transfer window for the Italians with several players coming and going. The most notable departure was that of Miralem Pjanic who went to rivals Juventus. They have signed Mohamed Salah and Stephan El Shaarawy on permanent deals to try replace Pjanic’s creative spark, but I think they may need a bit more. Roma haven’t played a competitive match yet, but did win all five of their pre-season friendlies including a 2-1 win over Liverpool, so they will be confident going into this match.

Porto vs Roma Predictions

Both sides are arguably stronger going forward than in defence and I expect that to show here. With both teams to score odds on, I will be backing the over 2.5 goals market as this has better odds and you can find 6/5 at Paddy Power for this to happen in the match. This happened in 50% or over in both teams Champions League group games last season so I think 6/5 is great value for my first Porto vs Roma betting tip tonight.

Porto are very strong at home when they play in Europe having beaten Chelsea and Bayern Munich in recent seasons and Roma are very poor away having conceded thirteen goals in three Champions League group games last season. I fancy Porto to take a lead into the second leg next week so with this in mind my second Champions League prediction for Porto vs Roma is going to be Porto to win and both teams to score which is 4/1 at Ladbrokes.
