Newcastle will welcome Tottenham to St James Park (or should I say the Sports Direct Arena?) for their first Premier League game of the season, shown live on ESPN at 5.30pm on Saturday.

Newcastle will be hoping to build on last season’s progress after surprising most with their excellent display, whilst Tottenham are looking to begin a new era under Andre Villas Boas after the sacking of Harry Redknapp.
Newcastle have had a relatively quiet summer which should please Alan Pardew and the Toon Army as that means the likes of Papiss Cisse, Demba Ba and Yohan Cabaye are still at the club despite transfer speculation. Tottenham on the other hand have a new manager and if reports are correct they are about to lose one of their key players as Luka Modric looks likely to complete a move to Real Madrid.
Newcastle will be looking for revenge after suffering a humiliating 5-0 defeat at White Hart Lane last season; however in reality I think both sides would accept a point from this Saturday’s opener.
Tottenham will be hoping their new Centre-Back Jan Vertonghen can settle in to the fast pace of the Premier League quickly as he will be called upon to deal with Senegalese duo Cisse and Ba. One boost for the Spurs defence however is the return to fitness of right back Kyle Walker who can provide as much of an attacking threat as defensive cover.
This is a hard one to call so I’m sitting on the fence for this match and predicting the draw, I do think it will be an entertaining game with plenty of chances however and I wouldn’t rule out a repeat of last year’s 2-2 draw in this fixture. In the heat of the opening day Geordie atmosphere I also wouldn’t rule out a few tasty challenges and with this in mind it could well be worth considering Paddy Power’s opening weekend red card money back special for any correct score, first/last goalscorer and scorecast bets that you fancy having a punt on!
