Manchester United v Sheffield United predictions and free football betting tips for Saturday’s live FA Cup match from Old Trafford.
Louis Van Gaal may well have seen his side gain their first victory in nine against Swansea last weekend, but the pressure is right back on them as Sheffield United travel to Old Trafford for their FA Cup third round tie on Saturday – will Sheff Utd cause an upset?
Man Utd v Sheffield United Predictions
A defeat for United is unthinkable for the fans, but can the League One side produce an FA Cup upset of epic proportions, and consign LVG to yet more questions about his side’s dismal displays?
The Blades have been performing brilliantly recently, barring last weekend’s defeat to sixth placed Peterborough. Before this, Sheffield United had managed three wins on the bounce and looked to be pushing for the play off positions. Saturday’s defeat sees them occupying eighth place with a four-point gap to the play off places.
Nigel Adkins’ side will be raring for the opportunity to cause a massive upset, and as we saw from last year’s FA Cup third round, anything is possible. Furthermore, given United’s obvious lack of confidence, and fragile defensive resolve, Sheffield United’s energy and vigour could prove to be a real test of their quality.
Man United managed their first win in nine last weekend, and this result has kept the fans happy for a week at least. But, should Van Gaal see his team slip up, or even draw the game against The Blades, there will be uproar at the final whistle. The FA Cup looks like Van Gaal’s best chance of silverware this season, and should Man United fall at the first hurdle, the fans will inevitably be calling for his head, again.
The match is a tough one to call for my football tips this weekend, but the way United have been playing lately, you can rule out a high scoring match. Sheffield United will aim to make it extremely difficult for The Reds to penetrate their defensive line, dropping deep and sitting two banks of four behind the ball and looking to break quickly on the counter attack.
I can’t see there being many goals in it, and I very much doubt United will score more than one.
My first betting tip for Man United v Sheffield United in the FA Cup is for there to be under 2.5 goals. Odds of 6/5 can be found with Paddy Power.

With Man United’s confidence being low, and their vulnerabilities at the back exposed time and time again, Sheffield United will smell blood. With the mood at Old Trafford already precarious, should Van Gaal see his team go behind, it’s difficult to see them gaining enough momentum to go on and win the match. On current form, I’m not confident United have enough to see this match through without any slip-ups, and so I think the most likely outcome is a draw.
Sheffield United would be delighted to take the match to a replay, and so my second Man Utd v Sheffield United prediction is for it to finish as a draw. Odds of 9/2 can be found with Bet365.

Goals have been extremely difficult to come by at Old Trafford this season, and United have already played out seven 0-0 draws at home in all competitions. I don’t think it’ll finish goalless, but I can definitely see Van Gaal’s side going behind.
My third and final Man United v Sheffield United prediction is a correct score tip and I’m going for it to finish 1-1. Odds of 11/1 can be found with Bet Victor.
