Football Predictions: Mainz v Schalke

 

When will the Mainz bubble burst? They were tipped by many to be in the midst of a relegation battle at this point in the season but they’ve defied all odds and are actually just three points off a Champions League place, currently occupied by their opponents Schalke.

 

Mainz have significantly improved their defensive work, and as a result, their attacking play has taken a bit of a hit which does usually mean a low scoring affair in their matches. Their last three Bundesliga matches have been settled 1-0, losing away to Ingolstadt but impressive beating Borussia Monchengladbach and Hannover 96.

 

Schalke too lost their first match back after Christmas, losing disappointingly 3-1 at home to Werder Bremen, but turning it around and beating Darmstadt 2-0 away, and an eye-catching 3-0 win at home to Dieter Hecking’s Wolfsburg. Schalke will be keen to get three points here, as that would take them into the final automatic Champions League place, at least until Hertha Berlin travel to Stuttgart on Saturday.

 

This is a tough one to call, as Schalke have much more quality than Mainz, but Mainz are dogged in their defending and with Muto and Malli counter-attacking for them, they are capable of scoring. For this reason, I think a draw is the likely result for my football prediction on the result, with favourable odds of 5/2 with Bet Victor for this result.

My second football tip of the match is for Under 2.5 match goals. Neither team are prolific this season and as Mainz games tend to only have the odd goal in, I’d think it to be a stretch for there to be three goals in a match they’re involved in. The Japanese striker has made a good transition from the J-League to German football, scoring seven goals in 20 games this season. He is the main striker and with the ammunition being supplied by Malli, he could easily find himself scoring.
