The host’s lack of quality is well documented – they are currently ranked 110th in the world and have won just three matches in their qualification stages for the last three major tournaments. They have emerged victorious from just two of their previous twelve fixtures and this only came courtesy of heavyweights Albania and Macedonia. Indeed, these two sides met in August last year, resulting in a resounding 5-0 win for Portugal – a cricket score did not look inconceivable at one stage.
The result is certainly a foregone conclusion – the real question is just by how many. Despite the call ups of uncapped youngsters in the form of Pizzi and Eder, the squad selected is a very much settled unit. The only notable absentees are that of experienced duo Hugo Almeida and Rolando.
Spearheaded by the irrepressible Cristiano Ronaldo, who already has four goals to his name this season, their attacking flair is perhaps the side’s biggest strength. Youngster Nelson Oliveira has inherited the ‘Number 9’ role and scored his first international goal in the recent friendly win over Panama. Whilst Nani has had an indifferent start to the season, he provides much vibrancy, dynamism and skill to complement his fellow two forward players.
These three are anchored by the hugely talented Joao Moutinho, who was subject to much transfer speculation over the summer. The midfielder, who is set to win his fiftieth cap for his country, is capable of dictating the tempo of any game and he can be expected to exert much influence on the game in Luxembourg.
The Bookies have Portugal at such short odds (multiples firms have them at 1/100) that there is no value in such a tip. A heavy win for the away side with a clean sheet seems the most realistic outcome in this tie – 15/4 with Bet 365 for a 3-0 win, 6/1 with Coral for a 4-0 win and 13/2 with Coral again for a 5-0 win. Portugal at a handicap of -4 can be found at 6/4 with Bet 365.
