Newcastle travel to Anfield on Sunday in Sky Sports televised 4pm kick-off, and they will be hoping that the fixture lives up to previous years.
Liverpool are a best priced 8/13 with Blue Square, the draw is 3/1 with various and Newcastle can be backed at odds of 5/1 with Paddy Power.
So if Steven Gerrard’s comments after the Merseyside Derby are correct then we can expect some ‘tika taka’ football in the Barcelona mould on Sunday, none of that Stoke and Everton style football. But we won’t, because they weren’t correct, in fact Everton managed 359 accurate passes to Liverpool’s 257 with twice as many crosses, and Suarez’ teeth alone were at least three yards offside! But anyway all of this is completely irrelevant and the rambling’s of a bitter (and proud) Bluenose, so let’s get back to the matter in hand, Liverpool v Newcastle.
Liverpool and Newcastle have had some famous battles at Anfield, including those epic 4-3 Liverpool victories in the 90’s, if you fancy history to repeat itself you can get odds of 150/1 with Bet Victor.
It is a bit of a six-pointer with Newcastle in 10th place in 13 points while Liverpool are 3 points behind in 12th. After a rocky start to the season Liverpool finally seem to be accepting Brendan Rodgers style of play (Merseyside Derby aside) and they will be relieved that Suarez has managed to find his scoring boots with Carroll on loan and Borini injured. The young Raheem Sterling also looks promising and you can back him to score first at 10/1 with Bet 365.
Newcastle have had a decent start to the season and will also be happy that Papiss Cisse seems to have rediscovered his goal scoring touch after compatriot Demba Ba (who is 9/1 with Bet 365 to score first) took on the goalscoring mantle at the start of the season.
As far as the match goes we can surely expect goals, but 3/4 is about as good as the odds get for over 2.5 goals, Over 3.5 goals looks slightly more tempting at 7/4 with Sky Bet. Demba Ba is a 12/5 shot to score anytime which looks tempting as does Suarez at 5/4. I can’t see much value with Liverpool at 8/15, so ‘surprise surprise’ (as our Cilla would say) my unbiased recommendation is Newcastle to come out of this one with the victory, although I can see goals for both teams.
