Liverpool faced Chelsea in their League Cup Semi-Final on Tuesday and gave a performance that deserved more than a 1-1 draw. Liverpool dominated against a side set up to frustrate. With 62% possession and 19 shots on goal, they more than matched Mourinho’s men and could well have grabbed victory with a tad more composure in front of goal. A banner in the Anfield crowd read ‘Get Gerrard to Wembley’ and Liverpool’s performance was one of thrust and vigour; they looked like a team desperate not to slip up this time around.

However, should they fail to qualify in the return leg at Chelsea, they always have the FA Cup to try and give their captain fantastic a farewell prize; as long as they beat Bolton on Saturday.

Bolton have a consistently average record this season. They don’t appear to be challenging for promotion, nor threatening to exile themselves to relegation. They sit 10 points above the drop zone and 11 points below the play offs and due to their inconsistent results they are a hard team to predict.  Their only game in cup competition against Premier League opposition this season finished in a 2-1 defeat to a youthful Chelsea side at Stamford Bridge.

I believe that Brendan Rodgers will use this match to rest some of his key players ahead of the return to Chelsea and as such I expect this game to be a lot more competitive than it would be with a full strength side. Couple this with the fact that the Reds have kept just two clean sheets in their past 17 FA Cup matches, I predict an old fashioned rough and tumble cup tie. Bolton will surely try to test Simon Mignolet’s aerial ability, just as MK Dons did with success in the previous round.

MK Dons proved a tough test for Liverpool in the previous round, and despite the result, they showed that if you play direct football against a defence short on confidence, goals are likely to be leaked. Adebayo Akinfenwa proved an absolute menace to the Red’s defence and came away with a goal for his efforts. Emile Heskey will be relishing the opportunity to throw his considerable frame in and around a goalkeeper who does not excel aerially.

Liverpool have also failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five home matches in all competitions. I do however feel that with their confidence buoyed by the impressive performance against Chelsea, they will run out winners in this tie.
